Golf GTI W12 - Spot the problem with the rev counter @ GTI International 2007.

By T10HJP:

On hearing that the W12-650 was going to be at GTI International I jumped at the chance of some time off of work and jumped in the car with a few other forum members and headed off there. I took loads of pics of the W12-650 and was very happy with the quality of the picture that came out. On closer inspection of one of the interior pictures I noticed that something didn't quite add up, literally.

Called the GTi W12-650, it uses a twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing a claimed 553lb ft torque. The engine, borrowed from the luxury end of the VW range usually found in the Phaeton must have taken some design planning to wedge into the MK5 chassis.

What does all this mean? A 0-100kph in just 3.7secs and a top speed of 184mph - although this must surely be a conservative estimate given the power / weight ratio this concept should have.

The engine is mounted (longitudinally) behind the front seats, and powers the rear drive through the widely acclaimed DSG gearbox. Unlike most other mind engined sports cars, the engine cannot be accessed from the boot, instead access is gained via the cabin! Should make servicing a chore.

This was the first UK outing for VW's latest design study - The Golf GTI W12 - in fact it was rumoured to be the only UK appearance of the 6.0L twin turbo Golf at any show this year! With this in mind it would be critical for VW to make sure the concept car was up to spec and, to coin a phrase, ship shape and Bristol fashion?

Just wondering, has anyone actually seen the GTI W12 move yet? I mean with the engine on and under it's own power...?

Nope I only saw it running twice with the guy revving it. And the Rev counter! You ain't wrong I checked my pictures tonight and it is wrong LOL.

Ah so it does actually run then!

Giotta be a deliberate mistake, surely?!

  • skirrow said on June 22, 2007 at 4:43 AM

it moves... i saw them take it round the back of the stand at about 2mph... god dam that guy was annoying reving the thing! on off on off on off on of

why so much press though?  an r32 with an HPA twin turbo has 650bhp, holds GTI ints sprint record last year of 2.9 sec 0-60 and goes 203mph, and you don't have to look like a chav, give that some press...

  • haf1zur said on June 22, 2007 at 5:03 AM

even with 550bhp, the r32 with twin turbo is faster

    so why a w12 6.0 is only 3.7sec 0-60 is a mystery

Probably down to weight and  'over' conservative estimates.

Oh, that and the fact it drops 1000 revs when it hits 7k rpm lol!

Only just caught up with this thread. Yes, I can confirm that the GTI W12 was running and driving around while at Inters. Not long after it arrived in the back of the truck on the Friday, just as we were setting up, and was driven off, it had to be taken to one of the hangars across the site for overnight safe storage. VW UK PR man Angus Fitton drove it and a couple of us drove course cars ahead of and behind it to escort it there. I was hoping to get some car-to-car photos enroute, but 1. It wasn't going very fast and 2. there was some concern about it getting hit by stone chips on the way so we weren't able to move alongside it.

No promises, but the hope is that we can get it back again next year, by which time it will have been cleared to make some high-speed runs. Would be great to see it up against Dubweiser Golf or Big Dub on the sprint track :)
