Regal Autosport VW Cup Car 'Hot Lap' Day @ Brands Hatch

Tony Gillham is organising a 'Hot Lap Day' on the 27th June at brands hatch in the Regal MK5 VW Cup car see previous blog posts for build up details) and also the 366 BHP track ready Regal Astra VXR, obviously i know you guys are going to be more interested in the cup car!

The prices are £35 for 3 laps in the passenger seat of either of the cars, or £50 for 3 laps in the passenger seat of each. This includes the insurance for your time on the track. The cars will be driven by Tony, and he knows brands like the back of his hand - this will probably the fastest you'll ever lap this track!

Refreshments etc will be supplied trackside.

The VXR will be running in the morning (8-12) and the cup car will be on track (1-4) in the afternoon.

This is a great oppurtunity open to as many people as possible, we are not looking to make money on the day but to just cover our costs, and mostly to share the oppurtunity with the uk-mkivs / uk-mkvs community!

Update: Some of you might know the Volkswagen Racing 2007 Season started for us just over two weeks ago.

We finished preparing the car for the opening round at Oulton park at the last minute, about 9pm on the sunday with the our scurtineering for season commencing at 7.30 on monday morning.

The car passed with no problems but disatster struck when the car hit a patch of iol dropped by a formula Ford car sending tony off the road. The car missed the barriers, but the water rad, underside of the car and our brand new front splitter were all damaged.

The team did a brilliant job of fixing the car to get it out for race one where we had to start at the very back of the grid.

Tony had a storming drive through the field and managed to grab 4th place, placing him 3rd on the grid for race 2.

More heartache in race 2, Tony damaged the car having been forced of the track in avoidance of a start line shunt involving the 2 beetles that were ahead on the grid. The car was damaged on the front passenger side corner, and the tyre was damaged.

The Race was stopped, and with Tony limping the car back to the pits the guys were able to sort the car out and borrow a wheel from CVW Racing so it could make the restart, albeit from the pitlane. Another great drive saw him finish 6th place and placing him 4th in the championship.

I have an update from Donnington at the weekend just past. I will update you with this shortly.

That was a track day we attended to shake the car down, there's still a few more things that need to go on the car before the season starts, but there car is drivable and on the track. we've come a long way since collecting out lovely white GTI road car.

First "proper" test is at Donnington Park this weekend. It's going to be interesting.

Update is, car now has the KW coilovers, Alcon 343mm Brakes, Team dynamics wheels and as i'm typing this the AWE exhaust is being fitted.

Ok, the car is back from paint and in the workshop undergoing it's transformation.

Alcon Brakes should be on the car next.

The car is finally starting to look like a Race car!

Cage is in, interior has been painted and the car is due back from the paint shop today for us to start work on building the car.

Brakes, suspension, wheels, exhaust etc. We have people on this car full time to get it set up for the season opener. Things are about to move along very quickly. I'll be sure to keep you updated.

Quick update for you.

The race exhaust has arrived from AWE Tuning in the USA and the turbo manifold from Dbilas in Germany.

This is how the standard manifold compares to the new Dbilas cast manifold that will be going on the car:

The AWE exhaust for the car arrived this morning. Obviously, this system is for a race car, hence the lack of cats and silencers, but the quality of the system is just incredible and road car versions of the exhaust are available if anyone is interested.

The welds inside the flange have been smoothed out to optimise the flow of the exhaust gases

And who says just because it's a racing car means that we can't have a shiney tailpipe?

The car is currently stripped and having the cage installed. I will get pictures of car itself up as soon as they are available.

The MK5 GTI has arrived. Here is the car in it's standard form when it arrived with us:

And the only modification we've carried out so far, added a EVOMS V-Flow air intake which gave us a really good power gain, I can host the dyno sheet if people are interested. This was installed as a demonstration for Auto Express magazine, but the intake will feature on the race car:

At the moment we are building a Mk5 Golf Gti to attack the 2007 VW Racing cup with and I thought I'd keep you posted (with pictures obviously...) on all the developments of the car and hopefully it will be an enjoyable thread as the championship kicks off in about 3 months time!

I'll start off with some background information:

Last year Regal Autosport and Tony Gillham entered the Volkswagen Racing Cup in a New Beetle 2.8 24v VR6 backed by GIAC and VF Engineering. The lime green Beetle was a firm favourite with the fans, and Tony's skill as a driver meant that it was always up there with the front runners, but an unavoidable Startline accident early on in the season menat that the car needed to be repaired and unfortunately this held us back from a really firm title challenge.

Tony managed to grab a number of podiums, including one race win at Brands Hatch, and finished 4th in the championship.

Tony was pleased with the car, but it simply didn't have the straight-line speed needed to be fully competative at most circuits in the UK, so wishing to stay in the VW cup in 2007 he needed a new car. The Beetle has been sold to someone who is going to run it in the championship this year, and the proceeds have gone towards our latest championship contender, a UK MK5 GTi Road car.
