    Hi,
try IVC (Independent VW Audi Centre) Globe Road, Off Water Lane,
    Leeds LS11 Tel. 0113 242 0875

    or

Princess Garage, Chapel Street, Headingley, Leeds,LS6
    Tel. 0113 275 1392.

Smaller independents are more inclined to try and fix the fault unlike dealerships.

I got a reconditioned gearbox for £600 ex. VAT. Should last longer getting a reconditioned one rather than a second hand one.
The cause of the gearbox failure is the rivets breaking (too soft metal) that attach the differential to the final drive gear.
In the reconditioned gearbox the rivets are replaced with bolts which are stronger.

Getting a recon box is prolly the best long term bet but as these are usualy exchange items you will have to expect to pay the full whack as they wont accept a damaged casing as an exchange unit.

Would highly recommend going to a gearbox specialist rather than dealer, will save hundreds of pounds and get better quality work done.

Will a box from another mk4 fit? I was told provided I changed the flywheel/clutch and driveshaft flanges I could.. although the thought of the dual mass flywheel puts me off :)

    Anyone got any idea's?

    Any help appreciated

i suppose you could but the rest of the range use cable change , so you would have to change the flywheel, clutch, starter, box, slave cylinder, shifter  etc

its more work than its worth and will end up costing you way more and the ratios will be way out too

so in effect the answer to using a gearbox off another model is a no
