Just wondering what people expect a typical clutch life to be. I noticed the other day after driving around in a new A3 TDI that my cluth point is practically on the floor in comparison to the Audi. Is there anyway of estimating clutch life remaining?

the way i understood it, if your clutch bite point is low down its okay. Only at the highest point would that indicate wear issues? I may be wrong.

I'd agree to that, you want the biting point nearer the floor.  If it's high then the clutch is wearing out and needs replacing.

In the good old days, the biting point of the clutch depended only on how it is adjusted.  It was a fallacy to assume you could get a good view of how worn the clutch was by how far the pedal came up before go-go time.  Only broken fingers/springs on the pressure plate gave the game away.  A noisy thrust bearing signified either a very old clutch or that some oaf had been driving with his foot resting on the pedal all the time.  Some clutches were self adjusting, others were tweaked at service time or by dealers prior to sale.

I knew a driving instructor who always had it adjusted reasonably high to help learners get their first feel of the biting point.

If the Golf clutch has any adjustment, the same principle applies.  You can adjust the pedal up or down. I can't go and check on mine, 'cos I've got DSG but I've just looked at a Polo and the adjusting screw is at the gearbox end of the cable so things are still the same.

The general rule is:   Drive sensitively and do most of your miles on the motorway - clutch lasts forever.  Pretend you are Ayrton Senna, burn off every set of lights, drive with your foot on the clutch pedal all the time, hold it on the clutch at lights and hills, especially with a caravan on the back - clutch lasts about 5 mins. Buy a used car and it's pot luck how long the clutch will last.

When I was lead footed 14 year old I burnt out the nearly new clutch on my Dad's car trying to get it out of where I'd got it stuck (before he came back). Happy days.

How long should a clutch last - one of those how long is a piece of string questions.

Like I said, couldn't check the Golf, because I've got DSG, but the Polo is deffo a cable with an adjuster nut at the end.

In the days when everything had a hydraulic clutch, you either adjusted the push rod length (Ford, Vauxhall) or the stop position (Mini, etc).  Life was so much simpler then.

i wouldn't dwell on it mate. My clutch pedal feels very high in comparison to other cars but works fine. My car has 30k on it now.

Mine has 68k and slips a little everynow and then when i floor it coming off a slip road. I have tough choice to make in the next few weeks. Either sink the best part of a grand into it with new brakes, cambelt, clutch (though that will wait until its on its last legs). Or think about swapping in which im loathe to do as I still like my Golf and theres not much out there other than another Golf that Id want. Keep telling myself that diesels are good for well over 100k if looked after.

Yeah, ive followed your...er...progress with it over time. You see, thats another thing, mines fault free and has been since day one. Theres the odd slightly ill fighting piece of trim but nowhere you could see without looking. I think Im going to pump another grand or so into it to get it up to scratch then run it for another year or two until the mk6 gti comes out and I can have a look at that.

yeah, if you like it, why not treat it to the new parts.

i know what you mean about trying to find another car that fits the bill as no other cars out there interest me too.

JMcQueen, i have a very similar car to yours at a similar millage!

I just spent a grant on it... Service, MOT, Cambelt, Brakes

like yourself, Ive spent too much money on the car and i don't think i'll get much back for it!

i went ahead and spent the money because any potential buyer would have deducted a grand off the price anyway!

i'm gonna run mine for at least another 20000 and hopefully it'l be as trouble free as the rest!!

    ps. is your car remapped?

i was quite interested in getting mine done but the boys at VW very strongly advised against it!
