Thanks for all the comments guys Big Smile

Its going to be a good few months before it is finished unfortunately, due to time and money constraints! There was a guy over on club lupo that turbo'd a 1.6, which was running around 180bhp with full custom mapping on a stand-alone ECU.

For now in terms of mapping I dont know what it'll produce as Im going to try and get it running on the standard ECU re-mapped, even if it doesn't produce much boost or power etc, as it is unchartered territory - but I want to be able to get iot to the shows. Then, either next year or before depending on money, I'll switch the engine management over to stand-alone like megasquirt or emerald, and get it properly mapped and set-up!

Im hoping for at least 150bhp, and up that to 200 bhp with progressive nitrous Big Smile

Think that answers all of your questions!

     Cheers guys! Smile

Nice.. there was a guy on here years ago from Bristol IIRC who turbo'd a 1.4 think he was using the head from a polo Gti, i'm sure he managed around the 150-160mark on the standard ecu..

    Goodluck with it Yes

Lol yes as alleyroo has said it'll have an intercooler, just like any other turbo car! Will just go for a FMIC from ebay for now, nothing overly special!

Im in the process of getting the head off, and the centre rocker cover bolts are completely corroded. Im not happy as they're being a pain to remove, and ive already broken a stud extractor, grrrrr! Considering they're only 4 years old I'm surprised, they're the worst corroded parts on the engine!

Its good to hear someone else has actually tried it and got it working, Im not sure about the head but will look into it - but the plan for now is to keep the head thats on it,  and possibly have a go at polishing it / enlarging routeways slightly. Will also be looking at uprated valves and retainers to hopefully up the rev range slightly. The more Im thinking about it, its going to be easier to get the forged pistons and steel rods in it now whilst the engines apart, and then in the future if I want to go for a bigger turbo it can be done... Decisions decisions! Smile

The forged pistons sound like a good idea IMO, as the stock internals ain't designed for a blower. It's a shame I didn't know about this little project a couple of months back mate as I had a standard intercooler and hoses that you could have had for a fiver (thats what they made on fleebay lol). Will be good to see it once its finished, with the striped interior you might be able to give my 260ponys a run for their money!!

Hi bud, the 1.4 and 1,6 engines are identical, apart from the crank. They're not a bigger bore, just a longer stroke! So I wouldn't really gain anything, but thanks for the offer! Did you get my PM about the nitrous kit you might be selling?? Wink

Well all professional tuners have to start somewhere... lol! Big Smile

Andy, there's a place on ebay, the guy is called  'theintercoolerking' or something, thats who Im planning on buying the intercooler from at the moment, as he has the exact size I want, and IIRC its only about £70 brand new!

Tomorrow Ive got the day to work on her, so Im hoping to:

1.) Get the head off and inspect the condition of the engine.

     2.) Drain all fluids.

3.) Get the coolant splices onto the radiator hoses ready for the turbo coolant lines.

4.) Get the sump off ready to drill the oil return feed from the turbo.

5.) Start hacking the inlet manifold up ready for the custom made intake going on there.

6.) Get the front bumper, and other bits off ready for intercooler piping.

7.) Cut away the side engine cover, and mount the new exhaust backbox ready for connection to the turbo downpipe.

So tomorrow night will hopefully have some more progress pics Smile

    Just another quick update...

Spoke to Erik at advanced autosport, and got some great information! Its looking like for the 200 bhp figure I will need pistons and rods, but I'll be able to use a steel crank out of the one of the diesels. I'm also going to be looking at valves, springs, etc to get the head breathing better. Because it is so easy to take the engine up to a 1.6, and the crank will be changed anyway, its looking like the final product will be a 1.6T instead of 1.4T. For the extra 200cc it'd be stupid not to, when prices are going to be virtually identical.

In terms of the gearbox... he has advised to change it, he managed to pick-up a 5 speed straight cut box last year for £850 from Germany. They've also got a 1.4/1.6 there running a 6 speed sequential which is apparently nuts to drive! Big Smile

Im getting excited now, and with the uprated internals, Im going to be able to push the nitrous up, possibly to a 75/100 shot on progressive. Ok this will not be used on the road, but for the strip that'll help no end!

Its also looking less and less likely that she'll be ready for the summer show season coming up due to time and money constraints, but if I'm going to do this I mays well do it properly rather than rush and half-bodge it, which could end up destroying the whole engine!

The brake set-up has already been upgraded all around to 312mm up front, and 256mm rear from the TT quattro. Only other thing I will be doing for now is full fluid chage to 5.1, and stainless steel flexi hoses.

In terms of driveshafts, they will need upgrading, but that is something thats going to cause more problems; as I need to notch the chassis legs first because its catching now even with the smaller dia. 1.4 driveshafts! Hopefully I'll be able to get something off another model that is uprated! That's something Im going to have to look into more.

Small update; after some more research there's a guy running one of these 1.4 engines with an eaton supercharger pushing roughly 180 bhp and on stock internals - and has been absolutely fine, no problems! And after a quote of around £1400 for just custom pistons and rods, its simply not something in my budget this year, so the plan has changed slightly...

Because of this, I'm hoping to get it to the shows this year, but it'll be running low boost, and Im going to ask for the mapping to be constrained to something like 125bhp to be on the safe side. Not what I wanted but I dont think I can wait another year with it sitting in the garage doing nowt all until I save more money!

Got a new headgasket today from VW at a cost of just under £20, and thats going off to Mike at Ferriday Engineering who's going to draw it up and get it cut out via. computer to make a 2mm aluminium head spacer, which will lower my compression from 10.5 to around 8.5! Cost of that is £109, which I don't think is too bad.

So when I get that back which apparently only takes a few days, I can get the head off and get the spacer on, and do the cambelt and engine mounts change, which is just something that needs doing anyway!

If it ain't rubbin you ain't dubbin!

    Cheers bud! Big Smile

Another quick update... Whilst sitting reading a performance manual last night in bed, I thought I'd quickly jot down everything Ive already spent and have to spend to get her back on the road, and working... Seems I've gone quite a bit over budget! By the time she's working, I reckon I'll have spent close on £2200... Eek! Approx. £500 of that is bits I would have needed anyway, i.e. cam belt, engine mounts and a few other bits, so turbo conversion is going to cost me around £1700. The big blow is that it'll only be mapped to around 125bhp, due to the fact I cant afford internals yet, and don't want to risk breaking anything. After the internals are done with a new map she should quite happily push 180 / 225 with nitrous. Breaks down like this:

    Money I've already spent:

£400 - Turbo, downpipe, and original exhaust

£300 - Vibratechnics engine mounts (Needed replacing, and with the VW parts coming in at £220, I decided to upgrade them...)

£220 - VW parts (cam belt kit, head bolts, oil filter, gaskets, coolant line splices, + bits and bobs etc.)

£150 - 2mm Aluminium  decompression plate, and custom exhasut gasket to help prevent heat soak into head.

    £30  - New exhaust backbox.

    £1100.

Parts still needed to be purchased:

    £75 - Sports Cat.

    £25 - Exhaust piping.

    £90 - Turbo oil lines.

    £25 - Turbo coolant lines.

    £100 - Intercooler and pipe + fittings.

£150 - Limp mode switch (to prevent the ECU going into limp mode whenever boost comes on)

    £300 - Chipped UK mapping.

£140 - Oil cooler with thermostat plate.

£100 - Oil temp, pressure, and boost gauges.

£95 - Lupo metal manifold, TB, and injectors.

    £1100

     Total to run = £2200

I know a lot of you will be thinking what's the point, and honestly, if I first added up everything needed I wouldn't have even started... But, Im over half-way there now, so I will finish this, lol!

The way I see it, I had a quote to fit the 150 / 180 lump for £3k from awesome gti, or the 225 BAM lump for £4.5k.  By the time I've spent another £1200 to take my costs to around £3500 I'll have an engine with uprated internals, which will be a 1.6T, and in my stripped out shell should go pretty damn well. Plus I've done something never done before in a golf!

Hopefully towards the end of the month, all the bits like decompression plate and cambelt kit will be here, and I can get the main bulk of the engine work done. Then it'll all be fairly simple work like intercooler piping etc.

    Smile

Am I the only one who thinks whats the point lol.

Surely you can get the 1.8T conversion done for decent money i.e less than 3k!  It would be faster and so much stronger!

Worst thing is to spend all this money then it all blow up because its not a strong engine?

But fair play for trying to do something different

coils slammed, porker rims, polybushed, mapped, carbonio forge dv, tints, bonnet bra, stubby mirrors plus few other bits

Thats why it's only going to be mapped to around 125bhp until the internals are done. After internals are done it will be stronger than a standard 1.8T engine, and with the new crank it'll only be 200cc behind the 1.8T - so in reality I don't see there being that much difference... The main being the 20V over 16V.

Another reason this will help me, is that I can insure it cheaper at 125 bhp for another year, so I can actually get it to shows, lol! Until I get (hopefully) another years no claims.

Thanks for the comments, and like you say, I wanted something different! Smile

I like this because that is the point of "MODDING" being different and taking what you have and work with that to make the best it can be without having to spend your life paying for something that will lose value faster than anything.

I love it mate and can´t wait to see it finished and tearing up the road Yes

The same as i am putting a Turbo onto my V6, because I CAN lol
