Well after a week n a half of waiting I've finally collected my new car today. Up since half 6am to make the trip from Cheshire to London and back again with it in tow. Very pleased with it, already got expensive plans for it but few niggles to sort out first before I start spending a fortune. Pics first and then queries.

now before i even put a deposit down on it i of course scanned it using vagcom to see if anything serious occured so now its home i want to solve the two fault codes that came up. The first is 17664 - engine coolant temp sensor. is this just a case of replacing the sensor itself? I see that vwspeed send an item fitting the decsription http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/Green_Temperature_Sensor-1349-241.html i assume this is a common fault n its just a case of whacking in a new one?

the next is 00928 - locking module for central locking front driver side, implausible signal - intermittent. is this the other common fault ive been hearing about the door lock module that could be effecting it?

Im also not 100% but i think the boot isnt being operated by the central locking should i be checking inside the boot for the washer pipe coming loose? does this still happen even tho the washer on the boot works? could it be the ummm whatever it calls has gone wrong?

noooo nothing is huge as I knew but wee niggles I might as well sort out first before anything else. Going to do interior bits n bobs I want, make it a bit more special inside and the sound and then whether i move on to the outside is yet to be seen. Perhaps coilovers and wheels and then thats it but im weak so ill probably cave!

Temp sensor is a doddle and common. Door lock is a little trickier, but hardly worth losing sleep over - oh, and de-lock it too. I swear by Votex in Congleton if you're not doing it yourself.

    Looks a nice car too!

    Mike.

do they do everything or only particular jobs then? you must be pretty local, my work offices used to be out of congleton but moved to macclesfield now, i was in congleton working at the weekend.

so the temp sensor is that item that vwspeed sell? I aint loosing sleeping over either probs, just wanna get em sorted really, nothing serious enough to make my tummy ache with worry anyways! Ill delock it soon as the locking is sorted.

Your boot lock is down to the microswitch new boot lock and it should be fine. Think I paid about £40 for mine.

They're a VAG specialist and a REVO dealer, tucked away on West St. clicky I've used them for years and they're superb.

I work in Macc BTW - it's a nightmare to get in and out of!

Oh god yeah, much cheaper than most. I use them because they don't bull you, they'll happily tell you something's not worth doing even when it means they're doing themselves out of business and they don't mind you sourcing parts yourself and having them fit them.

They're very well known on the Seat forums due to a family connection - It's owned by James Pickford's dad (you know the Seat touring car/Porsche cup driver?) and the lads there built and set up the Leon he won the Cupra Championship with, so they know their stuff inside out. All ex-VAG technicians from the days where they used to diagnose faults the proper way, not by computer and replacing parts until cured.

After 13 years of VAG cars, they're the only people I feel completely at ease with using.

Make sure you get a top-mount kit and it's definitely worth replacing all the bushes, inc. steering rack with new VW/poly ones. Poly's absolutely fine, with the exception of the dogbone mount which is getting a little harsh with the cold weather... summer was ok though.

    HTH,

    Mike.

Golf chic thats a tidy looking tdi there, on the temp sensor they are a doodle to fit did mine on monday took all of five min's, just amke sure the engine is definately cold before you do it and have some extra coolant on standby as you'll need about a pint and a half of mixed G12 or G12+ fluid mixed 50/50 with distilled water. and jobs done.

Hop you get the stuff sorted

Your boot lock is down to the microswitch new boot lock and it should be fine. Think I paid about £40 for mine.

If its not opening with the central locking is it not that the lock is not in the correct position?

You can permanently lock the boot with the key so it doesnt open with the central locking.

Try using the key to open the boot the just shut it again.

Lock the car with the central locking and it should lock, then unlock again with the central locking.

The microswitch fault affects the alarm and auto relock option when the boot is opened, oh and also the boot light wont work.

And yes, the washer pipe can still be attached and it will still squirt even if its leaking water inside the boot at the same time.

Nice car. very much the same as mine but a 3 door.  Winter pack and all.  Heated seats are lovely.  I only put mine up to 3.  Last time I had mine on 5 I really did smell burning!

Drivers door lock:  Try unlocking it and wait around 1 min withouth opening any doors.  It should relock itself (security feature incase of false press of remote while in your pocket).  Now try again but open the drivers door only & wait again.  If it locks itself again the fault is that the microswitch does not recognise the door being opened and relocks thinking the drivers door is still closed - the interior light will also not come on.  Mine does this.  Advice is either replace entire drivers door lock (£60-£80 i think) , have a go at taking it apart and cleaning the microswitch, or just live with it by turning on the ignition prior to it relocking itself.  If you choose to live with it like I have be careful to not accidentally lock the keys inside when it auto locks!

Boot lock: As Garfie says, check keyhole on boot is horizontal or vertical - different positions either have boot working or not with central locking.  If your washer pipe was leaking in the hatch it would probably tell you the boot was open whilst driving and the alarm would activate all the time while parked up.  This is the water causing the short circuit on the boot microswitch.

    Coolant temperature sensor:  No idea.

    Hope that helps.

so will i need to drain the system to fit the temp sensor with you saying im going to need to top it up? im not sure about my heating atm, i left it running for a good few mins on the hottest setting while i defrosted the car, expecting to get in and melt instantly and it wasnt really nething to write home about heat wise?

just been out n checked the boot and it worked with the central locking. i think the lockin in the door is the prob as like i said the other day it took a few presses to get it to do the double open and open the passenger door so it could be when we tried the boot it was the same issue. I noticed last night that when i get in via drivers door interior light and puddle light on that door doesnt work so im assuming that it's the micro switch and it doesnt know its open? has there been a tutorial regarding this at all?

vdubz -  i dont know halstead no but I know where lakeside is tho. The friend was from Loughton so probs a bit further up n round from you?

thanks for all the advice so far!
