    myhopper:

cool, did they use film or spray the tint on??

yeah , i've thought about the r32 replica, but i think the front on the gti looks alot beastier!!

main reason i've now decided to do full gti conversion

i used a gti reg that was for sale as used at the dealer to find parts quicker, and to my suprise the rear valance had been sprayed by its owner, the bottom piece was sprayed too, defo prefer the bottom piece being black, and it wasnt smoothed down-looked NASTY!!

anyone know how the rear valanced is "smoothed" down, i'm thinking of doing this myself????

    thanks

    Mike

Hiya mate, the tint used was the film type and not sprayed on,don't bother with smoothing it down take it down to your local bodyshop and get an estimate on how much it will cost as you'll be getting it sprayed from them as well.

    guys

awesome job and the cars look great, especially those bentley rims! my gt tdi's black so didn't think it was too bad. after looking at this tho i'm thinkin of getting it done.

mike, if you're only tinting the rear windows legally it doesn't matter how dark you go. if you're tinting the fronts as well they've got to allow a specific percentage of light through. the tinting company should advise you on this though.

    mk5 gt tdi 140, k&n panel filter. . . for now!
a tdi is for life, not just for christmas!!

Tinting the front windows (ie forward of the B Pillar) is ILLEGAL.  The reason is that you have to have 70% light transmission through the side windows and 75% through the windscreen.  All car manufacturers tint windows in the factory that is why car windows have a blue or a green tint.  This normaly comes in at 83% light allowed through. The lightest tint that i know is available is 70%, but when the window is already tinted 17% this will take it to 53% light going through.  (illegal).

The penalty is a warning and removal at the roadside, a £30 fixed penalty and removal and a £60 FP and 3 points + removal depending on the darkness.

Just for your info, what you do with it is up to you.  Tinting companies will always say oh the limit is 70 and i have a tint here that is 70.  The reason?  It is not illegal to tint the windows, just to drive on a road with them.

No worries.  Incidentally, you can paint any of the rear ones black if you like that does not matter.

And if anyone else has, how much does it cost considering I couldnt do it myself at all! lol Thanks for any help

It's easier if anything on a TSI cos the bore of the exhaust is the same so you don't need a step down clamp like you do on a TDI.

So would i go through same steps? Get the GTI rear valance, then order the exhaust for the 170 tsi? Then go to exhaust place get them to fit it. Would VW fit valance and spray it? Cheers

How easy is it to fit the rear valance? Just a case of undoing a few screws??

Yeah a few screw's and a lot of careful tugging and hoping it does'nt crack,it's not too hard really,I think's it's a lot easier to remove the rear wheel's to give you better access while on axel stand's.

Had it done and very pleased with the results. Completely changes the look of the rear & looks sooooo much better!!Yes

I've not got any rear mudflaps at the moment as my GT ones wouldn't fit the new GTI valence, so i've got some GTI ones on order. Dunno what the difference is??

    Excellent little mod!!YesYes

can i ask, are all the upper bumper sections the same? Is it just the valance that alters the shape?

Reason is I have a gt tdi bumper with the pdc cut-outs that i want to put on my gti. Will it work?

    Thanks

Does any one have any more thoughts regarding insurance and this mod? Also I am thinking of getting the GTI valance on my TDI which would also mean getting the exhaust from the GT TDI and having it cut and clamped as posted earlier in this thread.

My question is would all the above mods mean higher insurance and also would it void the VW warranty I have on the car?

Been watching this thread for a while now, and decided to get this done mod done. Brought the parts recently and had them fitted at the weekend and I must say I am over the moon with the result. Has totally transformed my car. My car is Tornado Red and have not seen another done in this colour. As this is my first post, I only joined up yesterday, not sure how to insert pictures yet but I have uploaded a couple to my gallery.
