    Hi,

I am the proud owner (2 weeks now) of a mk5 Golf GT TDi, I love it to bits but there seems to be a problem with the engine (I think). It is very lumpy on tickover and I have to give the throttle a poke when I start it just to get it up to a reasonable speed so it is not coughing and spluttering. Can anyone help me to identify the problem before I take it to a garage and have to sell a kidney on ebay to pay for the work ;)

    Hi Yass,

Yes it does seem to be fine when it warms up a bit, is that normal then? I had a Bora TDi before the Golf and it didn't used to do it so I assumed it had aproblem.

I would firstly change them temperature sender. This unit controls the automatic choke in these cars and if its faulty when the engine is cold it will not have set the choke correctly.

Have you had the car scanned with vag com?

What i suugest is,first scan the car for any faults,if non appear change the temp sender.

Easy fix not more than £30

I have had a vag com scan which came up with one fault but it did not give a name or description of the fault so I just wiped it. I  had a scratch touched up in the body shop so the battery has been disconnected so I just thought it was that but maybe not?

I will see if I can get a new temp sender from VW. Is there a guide or some instructions I can follow.

    Thanks Yass

Ok this morning it was lumpy again and I drove my girlfriend to work and in every gear when I put my foot down it was just totally flat no accelration what so ever, really really slow. I stopped the engine for about 20 mins and when I started it again it was fine?

Do you think this is to do with the temp sender too?

    Thanks

I would personally change the temp sender. Call the stealers and ask them how much one is for your car.

I had a similar problem recently. From cold my car would struggle to run clean for about 10seconds especially if not used for a few days. After the initial start it would be ok for the rest of the day. As it was still under warranty, took it the dealer in St.Albans and they cured it first time and the problem has not reappeared since ( about 6 weeks) .They told me there has software update of the ECU which they did  and all has been ok since. Hope this is some interest to you
