A few beers has turned what should have been a quite serious how to into this... ...

    Appologies in advance to :-

However, I think you'll still get the general 'jist' of how to clean your MAF...

Bumpety bump bump... [copied from other post]

As the originator of this thread, I tought I'd post an update.

Today I fitted a new MAF

    What a difference.

Cleaning may provide a minor but shortlived improvement but if your using your car daily the deterioration will be gradual and you won't really notice.

What promted me to change it was my really bad fuel consumption, I was struggling to break the 50mpg barrier, so something was really really wrong.

Fitted the exchange unit in the car park of my local dealer and the difference is incredible.

MY ADVICE NOW IS TO BITE THE BULLET AND SIMPLY REPLACE IT, DON'T BOTHER CLEANING IT, JUST CHANGE IT. IF YOU GET THE FLAT SPOT / YOU THINK YOUR PERFORMANCE ISN'T WHAT IT SHOULD BE / YOUR MPG HAS DROPPED. GET THE CAR READ FOR FAULTS, IF NONE SHOWN (MINE DIDN'T HAVE ANY) AND YOU HAVE THE SYMPTOMS I'VE JUST DESCRIBED THEN CHANGE YOUR MAF.

Getting the car serviced on Wednesday, how much extra would it cost to get a new MAF fitted at the same time?  (he charges £38 p/h)

Shouldn't cost much, it's a five minute job to change the MAF. It's an easy DIY job. The MAF itself costs approx £70 iirc.

For those who have bought a new MAF, what is the retail cost on one?

I found a box of security bits to unscrew the MAF at ASDA £2.97. You also get lots of bits that you will probably never use. Alternatively you can unsrcew the jubilee and the two philips that screw into the airbox, you will need to squirt ECC through the plastic gauze of the housing, you will do exactly the same job and save £2.97 wow!.

Dealer told me I needed a new MAF (though they didn't seem 100% sure) but you've inspired me to try cleaning it first, thanks a lot for that. One thing I can't find mentioned elsewhere, I currently get the amber engine warning showing while driving, if I do fix the MAF (by clean or replace) will this warning go out or do I need to find someone with vag-com to clear the fault code?

    Thanks,

    Mike.

This might help, its from my website:

    http://www.members.aol.com/mo7ameds/website/maf_problem.htm

I use Isopropyl Alcohol (99.9% Purity) to clean my MAF... been doing so since i got my car and it works very well. A link to the site I bought it from is there also.

Sorry Cat, the pics have gone from photobucket and I lost them off the laptop Embarrassed

They are however in my members gallery so if peeps read the words here and look at the pics there...

Saying that, I'm not convinced anymore that MAF cleaning does anything at all !!

It's more of a placebo effect and I'd say if in any doubt, change it.

I put a new maf on today, wow what an improvement, tbh it broke down, after cleaing throttlebody on saturday, it was ok then got worse then today it was terrible stalling every minute or two revs just disappearing when cruising at 40 and stalling while driving which is really crappy. I managed to drive the 15 miles home past german and swedish.

I bought a new maffor 105 but will get 30 back when old one is returned, took about 20mins to fit, the hardest part is the spring clip really difficult to hold in position. and away you go. revs were anywhere between 650 ( stalling ) and 2000 was impossible to drive, can't believe just putting in a new sensor fixed it.

Bizarrley i was looking on my phone on the internet on opera mini, (ukmkivs) and ct.ps pictures where still there this afternoon, i downloaded 3 of them somewhere so will try an upload back to photobucket, although I think the quality of the pics goes out of the window.

I just thought it was me getting older n not being able to drive properly anymore, flat spot, stalling as the traffic lights turned greenEmbarrassed bit lumpy tickover or just me getting used to the power.Had my milltek cat back fitted & it seemed better so just thought it was to do with that but next day after having it remapped as soon as i left BBT's i noticed a vast improvement with the new MAF that shaun had fitted after he told me mine was dead

Mods too many to fit on here !!

I'd have had no idea how to do that, in fact how did you ?

But again, I'd say cleaning has little or no effect, if in doubt exchange it for a new one.

Ahhhhh.... it's pretty simple really - all you have to do is delete the links to your old images, i.e.

    [ img ] Photobucket link [ /img ]

then insert the links to your new images

    [ img ] uk-mkivs gallery link [ /img ]

Or do you mean you can't edit your post?
