I know someone who ran a modern diesel on Red for 120,000 miles without a problem. Now been fined tho.

There was a very good thread on Pistonheads showing some very technical opinions as to why Red was perfectly safe for your engine.

We have tractors at work and the tractors put cutting gangs on and drive around the borough cutting various fields and verges. Using RED diesel.

During the winter..after bonfire night..a tractor went out with red diesel but swapped the gangs for a big 8 tonne trailer to pick up bonfire bits and bobs from around the borough. The customs pulled the tractor whilst on a field and dipped the tank. They were going to prsecute the driver for using red diesel in the tractor. They said if you had the cutting gangs we cannot do anything but since you are just driving around  the borough looking for crap to pick up and I'm sure there was something about a certain milliage from the depot.(maybe the distance between stops I dunno)..anyway they decided not to procecute....all tractors just use white now its easier.

think VW are Bosch pumps so your OK with veggie oil could mix it with white spirit so it detonates earlier.

Red diesel does not just have a dye in it, it is dirty crap diesel that other countries will not buy! However, not done this in my car but did test it on my mates farm, but if you mix biodiesel with the red, the dye blends and is untraceable.

There are mileage limits for tractors, as rediculous as it sounds, a farmer can only travel 1.5km from the farm on red diesel. After that they should flush the fuel tank, flush all of the fuel lines and change the fuel filters!

This is never really enforced and the general rule if you ask the fuzz is thar you can use it so long as you aren't hauling for gain. Only know this because my boss was fined at Lincs Show a couple of years ago when he took a tractor on the low loader and VOSA gave us an information leaflet stating the rules.

I'm going to die going backwards through a hedge in a ball of flames!
