The New Scirocco has finally been launched at the 2008 Geneva Motorshow. 34 years after it was first introduced to the public, also at Geneva, we can finally see what is billed to be Volkswagens affordable sports coupe.

The UK market is an important theatre for Volkswagen when it comes to selling sports cars, and pricing will be in some ways key to its sucess. No official prices have been launched, but expect a model priced very close to the Golf GTi. Introduced to the German dealers by late summer, and hopefully to the uk by the autumn. The rest of the world can expect deliveries by early 2009.

Affordability comes too with the engine options. A common rail 140PS diesel, along with a 122, 160 and 200PS petrol engines should ensure appropriate levels of performance, economy and CO2 output in relation to road tax. Every engine features a charger of some kind to maximise power and minimise fuel. A six speed manual gearbox is standard with the option of the first transverse mounted seven speed DSG.

Inside, the car is a four seater, the design of the seat layout will be transfered to the Passat CC. Leather and Alcantara options join two navigation choices, the second being the latest touch screen technology with built in hard drive. White bespoke dials finish the instrument cluster.

Active suspension, similar to the Audi TT and a panoramic glass roof top the options list of a fairly impressive standard car.

Not only have they designed and introduced an attractive car, Volkswagen intend to introduce this with attractive pricing too. At a similar size to the Golf GTi, is the market leader about to be overtaken by a long-lost relation who has just returned to the family?

I like it a lot. it manages to look aggressive yet still understated and stylish.

Not keen on the brown leather though Wink

Is it me or does it look very French in it's styling? First thing I said when I saw the images was "it's a Citroen coupe". The front end is very Renault Laguna. It's a dampened down version of the IROC concept which did have something about it. I'm a little disappointed, being an ex Scirocco owner (went to VW heaven last month) and a current Corrado owner I just think it lacks the forward nature of the previous coupes from VW. I'll get my coat.

Just had a look at some close-up pictures on http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/front_website/gallery.php?o=0&id=248211

I like the pictures of the front head-on and the front 3/4 but that's where it ends. Looking straight on from the rear...( picture 8 on the above link)  Are those love handles? I think that bell shape profile is so ugly. Picture 7 - looking at the rear 3/4, isn't much cop either. I prefer the rear end of the golf TBH.

It's certainly got a touch of Italian in the posterior department! Reminds me of the Alfa/Fiat styling of late.

A lot more agressive than the mkVI golf which is a good thing.  Not sure what happened to the golf, but for me it was really disappointing.

I like the Brera'esque tail - one of the nicest rear ends in it's class.

just read about this in latest EVO mag and I really like it!

Order books open in June for first deliveries in Sept 08.

Might hold off the upgrade to ED30 for one of these then.

Chassis based on forth coming MkVI Golf platform. Shame engine is not the 230ps but the 200ps one.

I really like it, just a shame the dash is lifted straight out of the Golf/Eos.

I though they might of made it a bit more individual.

Worth a look in September, if that's when it's available.

I fail to see how VW (or anyone else for that matter) can call this a coupe...its a 3 door hatchback at the end of the day!

    Still nice.

I think it is a departure from the GTI-R32 route but not enough, will still keep my MK4 R32 until VW try a bit harder!
