    is it the turbo?????

whilst driving the car lost all power on the motorway (limp mode) just had the car on a diagnostic machine and came up with fault code p0234 (overboost) either caused by turbo vacuum pipes or the turbo wastegate ...

i had all pipes checked and came back with the wastegate is sticking causing the turbo to overboost, which i was told by the mechanic has caused the whistle on the turbo having new turbo and wastegate fitted now they gave me a courtesy car which is a gt tdi 140 which has no turbo whistle and a hell of alot more power!

    so things look good

will let you all know how i get on

had new turbo and wastegate on now for a couple of days just been bedding it in for 150 miles..

gave it some before and i cant believe the difference no whistle and a hell of alot more power, if you have this problem then i would get the fault memory read and if it says p0234 then its a deffo turbo/wastegate problem....

Actually, there isn't a wastegate on your turbo, it has a variable vane system instead. But they both control boost, just in a different fashion.

its a "feature" of some cars, definately. I've had it from new on my car ( now at 50k ) and even had a new turbo and still have it.

PS - my car makes 191 bhp so its certainly not causing any performance problems

    Current car - crap mk5 & 2008 A4 avant s-line
    Previous car - crap mk4 1.8T
    Prior to that - 2xmk2s, a mk1, a Beetle

    Getting a bit samey, ain't it ?

anyway happy with car now noise gone , no limp mode , and more power (we like)

    thanks everyone

Did they tell you it was a wastegate actuator? Because it's actually a Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) actuator.

Basically, a wastegated turbo makes full boost all the time (at least when it can) and when the boost reaches the ecu's maximum for the revs  etc. the wastgate opens and dumps the excess boost. A VNT turbo uses variable geometry inside the turbo to only make as much boost as the ecu requires, and as such doesn't need to dump any excess. The benefit is that a VNT makes boost lower down the rev range and then adjusts to keep the maximum boost right up through the rev range. A wastegated turbo will generally make boost further up the rev range but not lower down.

To simplify: - A wastegate turbo makes lots of boost and only uses some of it while a VNT turbo makes just enough boost and uses all of it.

But it's a pedantic point I'm making I suppose. Yes

Just bought my MK5 GT TDI 140 yesterday and it has a mental whistle not the norm but it drives as quick as all the others I have driven and is returning the correct mpg?? I'm concerned but it drives spot on performance etc etc. It does give me a judder through the seat on tick over sometimes does anyone have any idea's??

I live life a quarter mile at a time!!!
