just wondering if this is a generic thing, when the engine warms up the gears are smooth as butter, but when its cold they crunch into gear.

anyone with a similar problem, please make me feel like i do not ruin every car i touch.
    thanks

IMO this is the norm with most cars. I'm not hugely experienced at driving VAG cars though. Only had my 2.0 TDI since Nov last year.

On a similar note I do sometimes have trouble changing from 2nd to 3rd gears, It seems to miss 3rd sometimes and almost go into 1st again. I changed my Knob and Gator (oo err) for a Genuine GTI one as soon as I got my car, so this may be part of my problem....?!

indeed, i have cruchy gears too when cold.

in the winter its very noticeable, but in summer i hardly notice.

i tried using a product called slick50 to smooth things up, it did work for about a month then went back to norm.

i have considered draining the gearbox and re-filling with some full synthetic gear oil but not sure on what stuff to use as i've read the 6sp O2M box doesn't like other oils apparently????

oil from VW is 40quid plus VAT

anyway i have considered it but they are not so crunchy and i haven't been bothered to look into the new oil more! i might in the winter though

as long as i'm not alone - my mkIV was identical (and i thought i was escaping- noooooooooo!) replacing the oil was what the stealers suggested but they wanted 90squids plus vat to do it for me, its not even that much of a problem once the engine has warmed up. I can live with it, ive got 12 months warranty from the old vee-dub, so on their heads be it!

    cheers guys

Was just pondering the same thing... It is rather raw when the engine (car) is cold and gets better when having driven a bit. Was getting a bit worried, but perhaps the warm weather will bring brighter days.
