     Hi Everyone!

Despite the occasional problems I've had, I'm still generally quite happy with my Golf - wonder if someone can help me with this... This morning I drove my 1994 Golf about 10miles and at a roundabout I heard a knocking from the rear (I think, it's hard to say) when turning. It stopped as I straightened up but came back as I put my foot down to pull away. I turned around and headed home, where the knocking would start again if I was driving up a hill, and sometimes from just accelerating. I got home and looked underneath and all appeared to be normal (not that I would know really but it all looked ok, nothing loose that I could notice etc) Occasionally the car makes a strange clanging metal sound when moving at very slow speeds, whether in gear or not. It was serviced by VW in Dec 07, around 8k miles ago, but they couldn't find a problem or the clanging noise. They did however tell me that the intake-flap motor was worn and would need replacing, but that it wasn't urgent. The engine management light has been on since the service. Current mileage is 48500miles. The best description I can give of the occasional clanging noise is that it's like something metal hitting the spokes on the back wheels as they turn but I can't see anything wrong. The knocking I heard this morning is totally new and I think it's coming from the rear too but not sure. One other thing, yesterday the computer told me the car needs servicing now. Can that be right so soon after the last one? I plan to take it to VW Tuesday, will it be safe to drive the 10miles or should I get it towed? I'm dreading this... can't help thinking it's gonna be expensive, and the warranty ran out last December! Any advice or suggestion of diagnosis will be much appreciated.

    Cheers, CC

Had similar sounding clanking noise. Mine was a heat/stone shield that runs next to the exhaust come loose. Initially I thought it was coming from the tailgate or light units but then realised it was coming from near the rear left wheel. Bought some jack stands from Halfords for about £15 and all solved without much pain (but very dirty hands).
