Having sold my previous motor recently, i am carless & looking around for a low-ish miles mk4 gti (turbo preferably) in the era of 98-00 (tax!) & within close-ish proxemity to Devon. Not desperate to buy, don't want a nail!

Came across what looks like a nice one, 2000 X, 87k, 2 previous owners, FSH & in flash red, looks straight. Its got a strong asking price of £4695 on a private sale, what do you all reckon is a good price?

that seems very high to me, personally i would pay up to 3500 for an early 1.8t with decent mileage.

Have a look at this post that was posted earlier today, these cars are at least a year newer, have less miles and a better spec (leather interior) for slightly less money than the one you have mentioned:

    Tez - That's a real bargain you've got there!

Torq - I'm much the same as you when I buy cars.  Would rather get the right car and wait for it than rush in and buy a lemon...  The one you describe does sound a little pricey, but is that greed on behalf of the owner, or the condition of the car talking?  I have to say, I am normally prepared to pay a few quid more for an absolutely clean car, as a good previous owner often saves a lot of hassle in the future...

     Tez - U jammy b******!

Wigster - Defo with you, willing to pay to get 'the right one'. If you havn't got solid foundations, what you put on top is worthless!

PS. Tez, the guy who bought my discovery off me last week flew down from scotland to Devon for it, then drove back! Mad!!!

Just found a 2001 X GTI T for £4495, with 55k & FSH, plus its in Indigo Blue. Sounds promising, early start & phone call me-thinks! Its from a prestige car trader too, so shouldn't be tat! Got to go 75 miles, tho' could be worth it!

     Hi Torq-Al,

I hope the car is worth the journey. As mentioned above, spending a few extra £'s on the right car can pay dividends long term. I've been there with my current Golf (2003 GT TDi 150) and a couple of previous performance cars.

Conversely, In my younger days I have "saved" a few £'s on second hand cars and regretted it when the massive bills rolled in.

Generally (after cutting out the small selection of deluded private sellers) - you get what you pay for......

Rang up about the motor & it was mis-described. It said 2001-1.8 GTI, assumed Turbo as never made a 1.8N/A then, (only 2.0?), asked the question of if it was the turbo model & all I got was 'does it say turbo in the ad?', 'no', 'not a turbo then'!    Indifferent

Needless to say, the search continues! Hmm

Yes they did make an 1.8 20v GTI (with no turbo) be careful with these as there are many different GTI models about, 1.8 20v, 1.8 20v turbo ( 150 and 180 Bhp) 2.0, 1.9 TDI 150 Bhp ( <<<< but its an Anni!)

Just looked back at the advert, and surprise surprise, it's now a 2.0 GTI. Chuckle I knew it was wrong when I went to the parkers website for a price guide & 1.8 GTI's are only up to 99W, so it was either a 2.0 or a 1.8T. Ad said Avus alloys & sports seats, so sounded 2.0ish! Worth a call, next one could be right! Wink
