I just wondered if anyone else has this piece of garbage?

I've used Nokia all my life and always stuck to the most expensive and hi spec phones within my budget.

On my last upgrade I thought I'd try the Nokia E65 handset as the screen was a decent size and the spec was pretty good...That's the positive bit.

Last week, having reached the last straw, I switched back to my old Nokia 6230i which I found extremely fast, reliable and very robust indeed unlike the E65 which takes ages to power up, then it shows voicemail icons which appear and vanish like magic causing you to constantly keep checking if you have any new messages, then the really annoying part "New text messages" but when you try to open them they vanish too, the only way I've found of retrieving the messages is to turn the phone off then they come back in ten minutes or so, not forgetting the lousy quality camera and the fascia covering which is actually a form of rubberoid paint which peeled off in a few weeks.

Any suggestions on a new handset..I'd like to keep the 6230 size though as it sits nicely in the coin slot in my golf when I'm driving!

I'm currently with Orange on their Dolphin 35 package which is £29.79 + chargeable unlimited Ev & wk £4.26...I haven't had any problems with Orange.

Many may disagree but i have found all the new nokias to be as awful as your experince with the E65, except maybe the N82  They are slow, zap the batteries quickly and are not built very well. As you are on orange you are limited to handset choice, the ones i would choose are the SE K850, or maybe the samsung soul, at a last resort the N82.  However if you dont mind spending a little cash get an iphone from ebay or wait for the new one and unlock it, fabulous phone.

Have you tried updating the phones software? I had issues with my 6234 and an upgrade sorted it. You can do it yourself with a cable and Nokia software that is free download from the Nokia website.

Is it fast though BG as I'm really impatient at times!! Hmm, I really like apple products so I might have to look into that. Nokia used to be pretty good as I remember, but the E65 is Christmas cracker quality!

I think you'll find that all of the 'Smart' phones have short comings of one kind or another, hardly surprising when they're bristling with all that technology. I guess it boils down to your requirements I just want a reliable compact phone to make phone calls, no wifi/ 3g etc.. I find the 6300 does the job, previously I had a 6230i which never let me down.

     Odd.

I've been using mine for over a year. Syncs with exchange server seamlessly, Battery last 2-3 days, with 12-2 hours per day of calls, a permanent data connection, and bluetooth on all the time.

Works with the hands free kit in the BM.

Can't fault it. Re boot it once a week, and you'll be fine.

Sounds like yours has something wrong with it.

If you like the old 6230 series,  then you should go for:

    6500 Slide

    6500 Classic

    6300

Those handsets are closest in menu and operation to the 6230i.    Have a closer look at those mate, you should find they are the best compromise.

The nokia E65 along with all the other 'E' and 'N' series phones actually run Symbian Series 60 operating menus,  so they don't function in the same way as all the 'old skool' Nokias.  ie.  It's nokia's take on Symbian's software

You can either accept the benefits (and certain limitations) of Symbian S60,  such as ability to run and downloads loads of useful programs  (Blackberry email,  MSN messenger clones, to name a few) and realise that the handsets run much slower, and generally take a bit more patience to use.

I personally love my E50 and E61 handsets,  they both allow me to use Blackberry and have MSN all the time.

Personally I'm going for a Nokia E51 in a couple of months. The wife will be having a 6500 classic I think. Mine will replace my ageing 6234 and she's getting rid of a 6300.

Maybe have a look over at the 3g forum for some help with the phone http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/forumdisplay.php?f=771 they are normally good at helping you out. Have used them for my last 4 nokias!

Also maybe have a look at the nokia software for your phone and go for the unbranded software. When i had my last nokia and had trouble with it i got it replaced but did look down the route of unbranded software as the orange software aint that GREAT! very slow etc.

If you have decided to change phone i didn't like the 6650 slide as i was used to the N series nokias so changed to N95 haven't had any problems with this one so far

    AHA!

Right, that was all I needed to know. I have no patience where phones are concerned so its the 6500 series I need then...will they work with my existing sim? I could just pick up a handset to keep me going?

I've had a couple of late generation Nokia's and both have improved drastically with a software update, the first was an N80, the second an N95. The N80 never seemed to get a brilliant signal, but the N95 is great.

I don't know if the E65 is whats known as a symbian phone, but I think they are, hence the slowness. I wouldn't give up on it just yet, give the Nokia software updater a go.

My N95 was a bit slow and clunky when I first got it, but after the first update it improved no end and the most recent update improved it slightly more, got a better battery life too. Mine usually goes 3-4 days without a charge but I'm not a heavy user, just calls and the odd bit of TomTom 6.

I had an SE K800i for a while, really good phone, amazing battery life but I just couldnt live with the user interface so I got the N95

Yep, if the phone is unlocked , or locked to Orange, then just stick your simcard in and away you go. All your account details etc. are tied to the simcard, not the phone.

You can pick up a 6500 Classic on Orange PAYG here for £129 + £10 mandatory credit. £139 total.

     Hi Mate,

I've got an E65 and have ot say I've found it to be excellent (if vry slow).  I agree with ya completely about the rubber type coating, however, it just makes me feel at home as it's just like the coating VW used on the interior of the MK4 Golf.  lol.  AT least, my door handles, etc had peeled the same way until I replaced them!

I'd suggest the Nokia 6500 Classic too.  I see it has a few votes for it.  I got one as a free upgrade last week and it it much quicker than the E65 and it's smaller and lighter too.  Also, the keypad is slightly bigger, so you won't squash 4 buttons down at once when trying to send a text.  Embarrassed

    Wigster.

I don't know.. I have tried other phones but for sheer usability and size, the 6230i is the phone of choice. The last time I needed to change, I bought a brand new all-black 6230i from Expansys for around £100.00 delivered.

The reasons - it's a camera phone, can do basic browsing, good battery life, and by far the most important reason - can fit in the breast pocket of a shirt sideways meaning if you lean forwards, it doesn't go bouncing away.
