I have had my Golf GT a while now and have put around 6,000 miles on the car, I have noticed some annoyances with my DSG gearbox and wondered if anyone else has experienced the same with there GT 2.0 TDI 170?

    1. When driving off just touching the throttle in 1st gear sometimes does it from 1st to 2nd too, the car gives a jolt through the transmission almost like letting the clutch up too quickly on a manual gearbox and it kind of bangs through the front. I find it can do it when I just tap the throttle with my foot also does it more so on hill starts.

    2. When cruising through traffic on idle just rolling forward the whole car judders causing anyone in the car to feel like they are in an earthquake.

Has anyone else experienced problems of this nature, if so did you manage to solve it with VW?

My car has been in 3 times for the same problem resulting in no permanent fix, I picked it up tonight and the dealer told me they had done a software update on the DSG but the car in my opinion feels no better.

The technician spoke to me and said that VW have said they want him to do a comparison road test against another GT TDI 170 to see if its a characteristic of the car.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

    Regards,

    Mark

I've been having similar problems with my MKV but they found the problem to be a fuel issue and changed the fuel pump and regulator.  I was experiencing jerkieness when changing gear etc.

Thanks for your reply, but this isnt related to fuel the problems are transmission related according to the technicians at my local dealer.

The most frustrating part is the time they take to solve things, I guess its VW being slow on warranty.

Question 1- not really though sometimes I've 'surprised' the gearbox and it's had to do an unexpected change, ie from an even gear to an even (or odd to odd) and the change is noticeably slower and causes a slight jolt.

Question 2- Has not happened to me but I read in my manual the gearbox will warn you by shaking the car if one of the clutches is overheating due to trying to hold the car on a hill using the throttle, that kind of thing.

I went out on test yesterday with a technician, he said that the jolt is because if you lightly touch the throttle then come off and go back on it will cause a violent jolt apparently its a characteristic of the TDI 170 seems a bit strange that VW would allow cars to be sold like this, he said to me when in traffic situations always drive in Sport mode as it holds the gear longer and wont cause the jolt.

As for the judder they think it could be twin-mass flywheel or possibly clutches, I am waiting to hear further news on this.

I will report back once I know more.

I have experienced this jerkiness and the odd jolt (partic when selecting reverse - even on level ground) just not had time to do any more about it.

The dealer called me today, they changed the twin mass flywheel and also the clutch and apparently it looks to be rectified they are testing my car over the weekend so I hope it is solved now.

    hudsonmanx:

I have got this a few times in the GT, particularly when driving slowly i.e. in start/stop traffic or where you need to crawl around such as a multi-story car park.

Let us know how you get on.

Picked up the car this evening, finally no judder when rolling along on idle.

The car still bangs in when changing from 1st to 2nd when you goto accelerate then let off then put back on again, I went out with a technician who said it was normal for DSG in TDI models.

They changed the Flywheel and Clutch packs and also upgraded the software on the DSG.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.

I hate it when British mechanics have to undo bits bolted on at KDF-Stadt.

Wayside St Albans are my nearest, they were very helpful and kept me well informed.

I have had the car on a long run today the juddering has completely gone, it's still feels a bit strange when pulling away from 1st into 2nd but that could just be my driving style.

    Thanks,

    Mark

Well my car is now in with the supplying dealer.  After a day I got the call - it need a new DSG gearbox, two new wheel bearings and a new CV boot. All but the last item covered by the extended warranty. This amounts to over £4k worth of work - on a four year old car with 19,500 miles on the clock Confused

Lucky you have that warranty, last year when I purchased the R32 which I backed on the 30 day/1000 miles agreement they put a DSG gearbox in that I still have a copy of the warranty bill somewhere which was about £4,900 lot of dosh if you dont have warranty.

Hope yours comes back solved mine seems to be behaving itself now Big Smile
