No idea where else to get the pump from, other than eurocarparts.

It's not difficult to fit the pump yourself if it's definately the in-tank one you need to replace.  If you lift up your back seats you'll see the screwed on metal plate which you need to remove.  Under there you'll find the top of the pump, which unscrews with a bit of persuasion.  From there on, it's easy to remove the pump and fit the new one.

I don't have the Erwin manual for the diseasel Stick out tongue, but I'm sure there'll be a guide somewhere.  My hands are less mechanically minded than my brain thinks they are, and I still managed to replace my in-tank pump in less than an hour.  Unfortunately for me the old one was working fine and it's the external pump under the wheel arch that's making the whining noise and needs to be replaced on mine Sad

i got a price from GSF that was 88 inc VAT for the fuel pump, that was for JUST the pump, they said you could just replace it on it's own?

it was no good to me as my car only came with a level sender and no pump, and i needed to replace the whole thing. i have one now, got it from a breaker eventually.

yours will have 2 pumps, one in the tank and one on the side of the head(tandem pump)

    whats the problem?

i'm led to beleive the pump either works, or it doesn't. and when the pump fails the fuel will not be able to get out of the tank, and the engine will not run

See left_coast_resident's post in tdiclub about adding a secondary line on top of the pump, so it would still work in case of failure.

I have a pump from my 1.8t. The upper assembly has failed (outlet pipe cracked) but the pump is fine!

Will it be ok for a TDI?

It would require a couple of bits of fuel line and clamps and your original "upper part" of the assembly + the sender.

I've seen "how tos" where people have replaced the pump as I have described.

Edit: Doh didn't read that you had sourced one already!

The problem only happens occasionally , sometimes it stalls and then is a bugger to start again or is hard to start from when you turn the key, when it happens the tank is noisy - only way i can describe it, 90% of the time there is no noise and she fires up straight away as a diesel should, but every once in a while i can hear the pump and it struggles unless floored and is kept turning over, doesnt seem to matter how much fuel is in it and its happened when hot and cold ? brings up no fault codes and have already replaced fuel pump relay and water temp sensor as that was a fault ( now cleared ) so next has to be the pump i reckon as thats the only noisy thing left when it plays up !

Interesting problem, have you checked the connections to the top of the pump? My problem was a fracture of the outlet, completely different.

Do you hear the pump prime everytime (after unlocking) when you open the drivers door? It runs for about 5 secs to ensure fuel is available.

I presume you haven't been through any floods in recent months? The fuel pump recess collects anything from under the car including silt etc.

Definitely worth a good look at the top of your pump assembly... see my post somewhere in this thread...

    Good luck

Have checked  the top of the tank this week and all is dry and as it should be,checked the connections and all seems ok,and can hear the pump prime when first switching the ignition on, sometimes its noisier than others, when its really noisy it usually does'nt start !!!!

the pump does nothing when the doors are opened, will only come on when you turn the ignition on, for 3 secs then it goes off untill the engine is started, and when the engine is on the pump is on, and when the engine turned off the pump turns off.

if i were to guess i'd say theres debris in your fuel pump, sometimes causing blockages either that or theres air getting in somewhere.

Is the diesel different then? I can gaurantee the fuel pump primes for 5 seconds after opening the drivers door after unlocking (with petrol cars)...  that is the noise you hear. I was daft enough to forget when I had my fuel lines disconnected, the 2ft spout of fuel surprised me to say the least Surprise

No - the pressure rating is too high for the TDI, which is low pressure high volume.

Ah, thanks for that, useful info. Surprised it's "high volume" though... i thought diesels used less fuel!!!
