Ive been reading alot (mostly on US Forums) about this Mufflerectomy business and it seems quite appealing.

Basically you chop off the muffler and replace it with a straight stainless pipe and whatever tip/tips you fancy. There appears to be no real performance gains other than maybe the turbo would spool a little faster and more of a free air flow.

There are a few videos on youtube and to be honest i'm really liking the sound of them, i know its a bit strange to upgrade just for the sound but i'd really like a "non stock" more grunty sound and with the turbo whine too.

The problem being, I'm not too sure what a regular exhaust place would think if i walked in and asked them to chop off my muffler !

I went to Custom Chrome Racing today who are 3 mins down the road from work and the guy just said .." nah, if you take off the muffler then you'll be taking peoples windows out !" but he did offer to sell me a sports back box with oval tip etc..fitted for £185 - but i'd need to get a 4motion valance.

The main reason for going for the straight pipe thing is mostly cost and simplicity, does anyone here have this done and what were the costs involved? if it starts approaching the £100 mark then i'd be better going for the custom back box wouldn't I ?

any info and help would be much appreciated lads ... thanks !

but it would be boomy on the motorway

I'm going to be getting a Milltek downpipe/decat and non resonated system minus the back box, just going to buy a piece of pipe the same diameter and have a very slight downturn on it at the back hidden behind the bumper, should be getting done in the next few weeks, once I can walk again!

I had the centre and rear silencers removed on my lupo TDI but left the cat in position, Performance wise I saw a small increase in torque in the upper rev range (as if the silencers were strangling the car) but as for sound, It wasn't really that loud... Mostly because the turbo seems to get rid of a fair amount of it, However, it sounded great.

I'm considering doing this on my bora, But I'll be using the Milltek Downpipe, Milltek Centre box replacement pipe, and the milltek axle pipe with a custom made tailpipe. I'm guessing its gona be a little louder than your average diesel, But I'm sure I'll be able to put up with it :)

All this milltek business sounds good but also expensive!

How about a stainless back box with a slighty bigger exit/exits ? - would look nice too  Embarrassed - with the proper valance/fitting

I've seen some for around £50 on ebay. The places ive been and asked about removing the muffler have all tried to talk me out of it and recommend a full system or something alot more expensive ! Angry

I'm at the dealers on Monday for my cambelt (Sad),  Should i see if they have 4motion rear valance knocking about.?

Jumped off a 2ft wall last Sunday, Tendonitis (sp) in my left foot was the result, i've only been able to put any pressure on it since yesterday and it still hurts like hell, I was sure it was broken but the x-rays didn't agree!

Lesson learnt: When you weigh in at just over 15 stone, don't jump of walls, no matter how small they are!!

hmmm.. i would be dubious about this..

ran a straight pipe on my mkIV GTI

    it sounded like a tractor...

kinda silly really...suppose its not really any different to the single tube fart cannons that the barry boys use down here in NZ. they seem to pass road worthyness tests etc..

That sounds f'kin ace patch.!   so thats with straight decat pipe? I bet the G60 sounds pretty sweet stock though -  TDI's will sound alot more tractor-esque whatever you do.

You bought a Bora TDI yet !?

I tried to get my local powerflow to sort this out for me last week, he told me it was illegal not to have a rear silencer! So its going to have to be a DIY job, ithink he was just trying to get more work out of me! He wanted £250 to fit the DP, centre section and axle pipe(all supplied by me) and make up the smallest back box he could to fit. I thought it was a bit pricey for what is basically just ramp time!

Sounds really good, but your driving on the wrong side of the road Chuckle.

Where I'm at (in the states) we are legally required to have a muffler or your car won't pass the annual safety inspection.  I've tried to argue that mufflers are for noise reduction and provided my car is at or below a max level it shouldn't matter if I have a muffler or not.  Needless to say I haven't won that challenge Angry.

Keep in mind, I do not intend to remove any emission devices, only the muffler and resonator.

PS: It is legal to remove the resonator, but not the muffler.  And no you can't run a resonator w/out a muffler . . .

Just fitted a decat pipe to mine today and it sounds fine. I dont think the miltek exhausts are an economic mod.

The most interesting thing I have noticed so far is that after I removed the EGR last year, the engine took noticably longer to stop when switching off (because the anti judder thingy is in the EGR bit. However since I replaced the front pipe, it stops like it did before the EGR was removed.

I am taking it for a run tomorrow to see the effect on fuel consumption, I will let you know.
