when the strut is assembled with a new bush with the strut off the car...should there be any play in the bush with respect to the the spring plate?

I have replaced the bushes and there was abit of play, so if this isnt normal, does anyone know why this is ?

as long as you torque it to the right specs, then you should be ok

i dont think i had any play in it till after they got bedded in, even then it just turns rather than move about

I got mine from GSF (just asked in there).  I think I am going to take it apart again at the weekend and double check.  If its not that then its my wishbone bushes.

My steering is abit flappy and vaugue at the moment

    I hate suspension problems

I assume 21 is the nut although its called a threaded bush ??

There was no 28 when I took it apart, do I need this, I am confused ??

Apart from that I put it all back together as the order in the above diagram

Just checked ETKA myself and for the ASZ engine (130TDI) which mine is that is the right diagram.  So where the hell is that spacer and why don't I have it?

my suspicions are the spacer got stuck to the bearing and I threw it out when I changed the bearings.  I have just check Noah's suspension guide and have seen a pic of the spacer and I am missing it.

So it looks like I will be ordering a pair from VW tomorrow, hopefully pick them up friday and then fix it over the weekend.

I do hate it when these things happen.

cheers guys for your help, I'll let you know how I get on

from what i noticed, 28 is not needed unless you got an R32, its a spacer.

18, 14 and 21 should be the ones you need to replace, along with 17 just to be on the safe side

well if the spacer was there originally and I had no problems and now its not there and I have problems then surely the problem points to this spacer ?.

I shall check with the stealers to see what they say.

I replaced 18  and 14 but I never replaced 21,  this nut seemed fine to me, should this have been replaced.

etka clearly states the spacer is for an R32 only, unless your car is in disguise?

just been to the stealers and guy there reckons there is supposed to be play in the between the bush and the spring plate when the strut is off the car.

He also comfirmed what the the above comments that the spacer is not needed, it will just raise the suspension up a few mm.

So its back to square one, maybe the wishbone bushes are indeed nackered, though its abit of a coincedence that I took the strut apart and now there I get this problem.

Just completed the replacement of both wishbones.  Steering and suspension is much tigher and smoother, big difference.  The old bushes were shot.  I also replaced the ARB drop links.

However I am still getting judder in the steering when braking, however its not happening all the time so its not warped dics.

    Update

Just picked up a new set of VW bushes from the stealers and they are different (only slightly) to the GSF bushes I put on a few weeks back.  With the GSF bushes the bearing didnt seem to sit 100% snug but I thought at the time this is normal.  With the VW bushes and bearings they sit properly.

So it means taking it all apart again to swap over the top mounts and bearings

    Fixed

Replaced the GSF top mounts and bearings with VW stuff, took me 3hrs in total to do both sides.  Took it for a test drive and its much much better, not wobbly handling or juddering braking.

I have now realised that I have this 10mm ish gap at the top of my strust now. I put the spacer back in as it was in the original kit (L20 spec std suspension) thinking that the bearing needed it to work on.

Looking carefully at the set up now though it would appear that when the car is jacked up the top plate inside the engine bay rests nicely on the top of the boidywork but is proud by 10mm when the car is lowered - me thinks thereofre that this spacer REALLY should come off as otherwiset the suspension is lose, although never going to fall out. Think I could hear it rattly about a bit over bumps today so I will be taking the spacer out asap.
