Hello all. Could anyone tell me if the water pump with the metal impeller is a genuine vw part or an aftermarket part.

If it is genuine, does anyone know what the part number is.

I'm having the cambelt changed and i believe it is wise to do the water pump at the same time. My car has done 21000 miles and is 5 years old so not sure if replacing the water pump is over the top. Any thoughts?

Hi mate, i'm pretty certain that the w/pumps with metal impellors are an aftermarket item, i'm sure somebody will correct me if im wrong. Changing the waterpump is a very wise move, given the reliability of them.

nope its deffo an aftermarket part but well worth it,
i changed mine when i did my cam belt, good job as most of it was missing :S

any ideas where to get this part. Im due a timing belt in 3000 and it seems it is wise to get pump changed.

I got mine from GSF - http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ i think it was £28 +vat from memory

check your parts dept i've a sneaky feeling the part was modified because the plastic impeller was a silly idea!

21k in five years-well low miles!

I've nowt to drive. Oh great!

I'm not sure i'd be doing mine if it's only done 21000 miles. I think vw recommend 80,000 though most on here have done there's around the 60,000 mark. That's when I did mine. Seems silly to do it if it's only done just over a third of when most do theirs !

Def. do the water pump and belt tensioner at the same time though, if you do. Smile [:)] Big Smile [:D]

Thanks for your replies. Just an update. Couldn't confirm from the dealers that the genuine VW water pump has a metal impellor, but they did say the part number for this item has recently changed. Anyway got them to change it with the cam belt and a few other items (tensioner,damper etc) stressing i wanted the latest water pump fitted and not old stock. Also asked them to leave all the old bits in the boot, which they did. Close inspection of the old water pump showed a crack starting to appear! Only minor at the moment but wouldn't like to say how long it would of lasted. Quite surprised really because if the pump cost more than £25, because of the low miles i probably would not of had it done!
