    it is quite straight forward

you have to get wiring adapters from kufatec which are around £50

and then set the ecu via vag com so you dont get bulb error messages

I think you may need to have washers and a self levelling system installed with Xenons, to get through an MOT ?

Xenons are a straight swap with built in ballasts. As mentioned above you would require wiring adaptors and VAG coding, but it's not too much trouble.

Not sure about the washers and self levelling system (SLS)... Obviously you would be installing an OEM part which would normally come with SLS and washers. But when you install HIDs you don't require this - I just passed my MOT with HID but without SLS or washers... Anybody who went this path before?

There are NO requirements for xenons to have washers and/or automatic levelling at all. They are just subject to the same regulations as any other type of set up, ie, colour, beam position, security etc.

By the way, i am a MOT tester.

Washers and SLS are required for type approval on a new car but not to pass a MOT. However if you can installing the SLS would be a good idea.

Seems a bit of a grey area to me or am I missing the point somewhere Indifferent :

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

Is it road legal then to drive a car with aftermarket Xenons (without washers and a self levellling system) ?

    Quote :

"Anyway some of what was said by the DfT:

"Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which would cause a vehicle to fail to comply with the construction and use standards. A headlamp which has been approved to European Regulations for use with a HID light source is fine, provided the installation criteria are met. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). These items are not checked at the MoT. However, failure to comply may lead to enforcement action by the police and may invalidate your insurance. Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp. "

think you've answered your own question there

you dont need headlight washers or self levelers to pass a mot="These items are not checked at the MoT"

    however

for your car to be legal and not in validate your insurance you should fit them="Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling" & "However, failure to comply may lead to enforcement action by the police and may invalidate your insurance"

hope this clears up the topic that keeps poppin up

What you have to remember is that a car that has passed its MOT doesnt make it road legal, as the police use a different rule book to the MOT tester.

I've been following this thread and other about retrofitting Xenons.  This is definatly a mod I want to do, My question is "where is the best place to be OEM Xenon headlights unit, or is it only a dealer supplied part".  point to note is I live in Australia where MOTs aren't law so not to bothered about auto-leveling and headlight washers at the moment in time.

    Back for good,

Yes I know, just interested to know how much they would cost. I've looked on Ebay and can't find any and would like to know a guide price.
