    Hi guys,

Today I seem to be having a bit of difficulty getting my Gti to start. Usually I can just turn the key and the car starts. However this morning I had to turn the key a second time and press the accelerator down to get it to start. Then when I tried to start the car to drive home it took 3 or 4 attempts to start it. After I tried to start it after filling up with petrol it was getting harder to start it. In the end I had to turn it over for 5 - 10 seconds with the accelerator down to get it to start. When I got home I turned the engine off and then tried to start it again and it started a lot easier. None of the dash is dimly lit or anything like that, and once it is started it runs normally.

Is this likely to be the battery or something else? If it is the battery how do I identify which one I need as a replacement?

    Thanks in advance.

    Russell

Has anyone else got any thoughts on what it might be. As I have just been out and it started fairly easily, not quite back to normal but better than it was in the station car park 5 hours ago.

I am going to book it in to a garage shortly. But I noticed this morning that it seems to be smoking from the exhaust a bit. Does this give anyone any ideas?

It has been booked in for Thursday. Now I have had a listen with the bonnet up it sounds like misfire type issue. Will I do any harm to then engine if I drive it in the mean time? Or should I not drive it except to take it to the garage?

If you're still covered by VW Assistance you could call them out to look at it / connect up for a fault code.

At least you would then know if its OK to use till Thursday rather than, as already said, people guessing...

Would certainly sugesst calling out VW Assistance jsut to make sure it is wise to use it until thurs as for what it can be I would gues it would be a sensor of some sort, the plugs or ignition leads. I had a similar prob with my diesel but that showed up on the dash as the exhaust sytem warning light turned out to be a heat coil (diesel eqiv of a spark plug) so she had probs startign and was runnign on 3 cylinders instead of 4 luckily the VW assistance chap came out and sorted on the drive for me.

Right it is at the garage and they have just rung to say it is the boost sensor but then said egr valve later in the conversation. Either way the new part will be with them tomorrow.Yes

I have just picked it up. The fault was the Crank Sensor.
