Hello all my MKIV bredren, I come to you with my arms open in need of your assistance and to tap the huge and vast amount of knowledge that you have!

I have a late 2003 GT TDI 150bhp Golf and am sick and tired of jaunting up and down the motorways wearing out my right foot.

On this basis I want to install the retro fit cruise control unit to the vehicle.

I have found this item, genuine VW retro fit cruise control kit:

    http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/Diesel_Cruise_Control_Kit-2204-238.html

    1. How hard is the fitting process?
    2. I am a technophobe so is any complex wiring involved?
    3. Does the airbag have to be reset?
    4. Does any code altering need to be done via VAG COM?

A step by step breakdown would be much appreciated and any tips from any locals in the West Midlands area would be appreciated?

Im happy to travel to get some assistance and would also like get miles to empty activated on MFD and a few other things bit and bobs so any MKIV'ers in the local area I would be happy to hook up with and do some business for the right price Wink

Many thanks in advance and look forward to hearing from you all and making a few friends in the process!

There  was a guide done by a member on here that was hosted on another website up until recently that has annoyingly disappeared but I have a copy on PDF that I can email you if you Pm your email address.

Not used it yet but will be doing later this week - as far as I understand it the answers to your questions are:

    1. How hard is the fitting process? Not very, just a bit time consuming
    2. I am a technophobe so is any complex wiring involved?  No, just making sure you put a few wires in to the correct pins in a plug or two
    3. Does the airbag have to be reset? Shouldn't do so long as you don't turn the ignition on whilst it's disconnected
    4. Does any code altering need to be done via VAG COM? Yes, the ECU needs to be activated for cruise control which can be done with vagcom.

    Hope that helps Yes

    Jon.

    Thanks Jon for the reply!

So you will be doing this later this week, could I bother you for some feedback on how you did it step by step and how you got along with doing the job yourself?

Are you activating the ECU yourself using VAG COM?

I would appreciate a copy of the PDF and will PM you my email address.

Cant wait to hear how your attempt to fit it went!

Its quite an easy job to do, if the kit you're buying is the genuine VW kit then it comes with a booklet with a step by step guide on how to fit it! The only thing is the newer versions of the kit say to activate the ECU via Guided Functions ( VAS505xx program)

But im sure anyone on here could tell you the login procedure, i have it in a booklet in the garage if you cant get it!

Later this week?  Nah, already done! It all went smoothly - no problems with the airbag or steering angle sensor, got all the wiring plugged in to the correct sockets (this was a bit fiddly, but then I do have quite stubby fingers).  I activated the ECU with my vagcom and it's all working as it should be, no errors, no warning lights - quite pleased to be honest.

Have already emailed you the guide I mentioned - it has some good pictures in of what the bits actually look like (rather than the sketches in the VW guide) which is especially useful when doing the wiring to re-assure you you're doing the right thing and a few helpful tips for how to go about stuff.  Between that and the VW instructions that come with the kit, you should have all the info you need for it to go smoothly.

Any questions though, just ask Yes

    Jon.

Wow, thats amazing, I've had a gander at the PDF's you sent me (thank you), but it looks quite involved to me!

Doesnt help that Im a complete technophobe I suppose! Lol....

So how hard was the wiring element of the process? Did yo have any issues locating the correct sockets in which to plug in the wiring??

The wiring is easy - the terminals on the loom in the kit are all colour coded and labelled and the socket you need to pop them in to has all the pin holes clearly numbered - it's just a case of pushing the terminals in to the correct hole to click them home.  The trickiest bit was manouvering the plug out so I could get my hands on it to push them in.

It's easy - just take your time, make sure you have the tools you need, read the instructions a few times before you start and have them easily to hand when your doing it.

    Go for it!

    Jon.
