     Hi all,

Ive got a MK4 Golf 1.6 2001 Reg. Recently it has started making a whining/whirring noise whilst at high speed and accelerating. I originally assumed it might be wind coming in the car through somewhere. But now whilst under heavy acceleration you can hear it.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be? the car doesnt seem to have lost any power etc

    Cheers

    Alex

Simplest of things, but have you checked engne oil? If its old or lack of enough oil it may cause the whining Confused

I have not, I will check the level. The car is in for a service on Monday anyhow so they will change the oil then, hope its something simple like that.

Yeah hopefully so ! Big Smile

I used to have a 1.6 8v Bora before my current car, and that had a couple of gearbox issues. I'd dare say if it's not the engine oil to check out the gearbox oil too.

Oh god dont mention gearbox, about 10,000 miles ago the gearbox and clutch went completely on my 1.6! apparently a common fault due to the crappy rivets they use on the final drive year.

Got a reconditioned replacement with the vw repair kit fitted and clutch, cost over 1000quid!

Its just within warranty still so if it is the gearbox the garage will be in deep do doo!

Now that sounds very familiar! My old Bora is currently sitting on my drive witha a broken Dif thats cracked its bell housing and soaked the clutch in oil, Again! Angry Its the reason I got a new one! I think mine was down to my careful driving though Automobile

To be fair though if it was the gearbox, it'd be whining mainly as you used engine braking to slow down, not only during acceleration. Big Smile

Jeez, I just cant believe VW got away with fitting the gearbox with such poorly manufactured rivets which shear off at about 50,000 miles, I can only hope and prey its got the repair kit fitted as the gearbox supplier said.

Im popping it into the garage on friday for them to check the gearbox over as its still under warranty. Might get them to change the gearbox oil for some new synthetic stuff too.

I noticed last night, the whining noise only seems to occur when the Air Conditioning is on, and also it doesnt happen all the time whilst accelerating, only intermittently. Any other ideas?

Engine oil is fine btw, plenty enough in there.

    Cheers

Well the Air Con pump is belt driven, so the whining could be something to do with a worn belt perhaps. If the air con is having an effect you dont need to worry about engine or gearbox, its more than likely something else! Best to let the garage guys have a listen though they should know what it is.

Yeah tell me about it! Well if you had reconditioned gearbox, they usually replace the Dif rivets with bolts which are much stronger, so that shouldn't ever be an issue again.

Ok cool, ill drop it into the garage anyhow let them have a listen, the frustrating thing is it only happens sometimes so it probably wont happen when I try to show them! Would be good if its only a belt or something!

Im gunna take it for a spin tonight and see if I can notice the noise anymore, fingers crossed its not expensive.

    Cheers for your help
