My engine management light has been intermittent for a while now, so I finally got round to scanning it.

Apart from my heated mirrors not working, this was the only other fault... Any thoughts on a fix for it?

Thanks for the reply, Bruce.  I'll check it out.  The engine light seems to come on every few weeks then go off again after a few more weeks.  I think this is the 3rd time it's come on.  

Seems to always come on when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic too.

Stuck in traffic you say?  Big audio system?  Is it possible that you are loading the system down and the alternator is not able to keep up while idling or creeping in traffic?  With air conditioning on? 

Some modules are really sensitive to battery voltage and can't take a drop much below 11.5v - at least that is what I have read.  I don't know about this from experience.  You could set VAG-COM up to monitor the battery voltage.  Off the top of my head I don't remember the measuring block for the battery voltage but you could monitor it in several different modules.  I am not suggesting that you monitor it for the airbag module.  I'd just be curious if when you are stuck in traffic if the battery voltage drops substantially. 

Interesting...  I've only got and aftermarket head unit with my ipod attached to it.  However, I do have the aircon on sometimes.  Mostly I leave it on economy tho...

As a test I cleared the fault and drove to work the next morning with the head unit switched off.  On the way home I turned it off and had the music up loud...  Lo and behold, the engine management light come on!

So, it seems the head unit is drawing too much power and the airbag controller is suffering.  Any ideas on how this can be resolved?

i had problems with my sound sytem making my headlight flash with the base. the solution i used was to fit the larger battery from the gt tdi and a 120amp alternator.

unfortunately ive just binned 2 that with some work could have made 1 good one

Or as ajb100 suggested, uprate the battery/alternator.

Cheers guys  Would a 150dti battery be bigger/better than my standard one then (1.8t) ?

I don't have an upgraded sound system or anything, only a kenwood head unit with ipod connector...

Interestingly, I had the battery to alternator wire changed a couple of months ago as my battery fuse board melted.  I'm guessing it's highly likely this could be the cause of my troubles.

You shouldn't be having these problems with just a head unit change... You have an electrcial problem that needs solving - not just chucking £££'s & parts at it willy, and indeed nilly.
