On saturday i took a trip to halfords (who have 3 for 2 on car cleaning products atm) and amongst other things decided to pick up a clay bar kit having read about them on here and having it recommended by a friend ..

So yesterday, i gave it a bash!

    Using:

i forget the name of the car cleaner
    Meguiars Clay Bar kit
    Meguiars Tech Wax

    the result ..

Must say im very pleased with the finish, its so *deep* and feels great .. i was wondering however how often claying is recommend, as i heard over doing it can fck your clearcoat?

I heard a similar thing. In honesty im not sure but i have only done it twice and ive had the car for just over a yr now.

Just make sure after claying that you apply a good couple of wax coats. That way the dirt wont stick to the car as much... making it easier to clean and also less likely to need claying again.

Claying is a great little process that I think brings great results.

Claying is often reccomended twice a year to remove the harder contaminents that get stuck in the paintwork.

After claying, the car should be washed to remove the solutions the clay can leave behind. Then its just a case of a good polish and seal it all in with a coat of a good wax or two.

Should maintain the paintwork for  alot longer than unprotected paint.

PS: - I havent heard of it damaging the clearcoat but as said above, twice a year should suffice.

you'd have to rub for ages to remove much clear on VAG paint, but it is an abrasive.....

make sure you keep it really well lubed or it might marr the paint - tiny, fine scratches that'll need polishing out

Well worth doing once a year IMO.

Where does the black in Guinness go when you wee wee? I mean, how can something blacker than a black night with the consistency of used engine oil come out crystal clear within 20 minutes after 10 pints?

The meguiars quik clay kit or smooth surface kit clay bar is not abrasive. You can buy stronger clay bars that are abrasive, but the meguiars kit ones cannot damage the clearcoat unless you pick up some grit and rub it into the paint.

Twice a year is enough, unless you park under trees, or next to railway lines etc.

I use the claybar once a year and regular waxing in between has done me fine.
