There are two "modes." In normal "Drive" mode it works like an auto, but feels much more connected than a slushbox torque convertor auto. In "Sport" it does the same as in Drive but hangs onto the gears a bit longer. You can use also the paddles to switch gears from the steering wheel or bump it up and down the gears with the gear lever a bit like a motorcycle gearbox.

It switches gears incredibly smoothly. Would I go back to manual? I don't know. It's dead easy to drive and as I am no longer in the UK and driving on the other side of the road it is one less thing to worry about, but I miss having the control of a manual. In stop go traffic it's nice but I do miss the manual shifting.

I've got a GTI DSG with the paddles and can't think of anything I'd get in a manual except pain in my left leg and a faint wiff of burning clutch after 2 hours in a slow traffic jam.   DSG is faster, more flexible, more relaxing, gives bettter 0-60 and better mpg.  It just costs more and has a reputation for being a bit flakey.

I insist that my kids drive manuals, because it is good for the soul but me and the missus have DSG and won't be going back, ever.

In sport mode, the DSG box will keep the revs in the range of most power/torque. In regular drive mode, it should drive giving the best rpm for fuel economy.

The gearchange is faster than the best driver could possibly achive in a regular manual car and gives you a speed advantage over a higher performance car.

Would I go back to manual? No. VW with DSG and paddle shift - awesome.
