Surely a good wash and a polish with a Porter Cable is good for 20bhp across the rev range?

I love posts like this, having driven a vast array of supercars I am under no illusion that the guy in the Porsche could not drive or had his car mat stuck under his accelerator.  Yes it makes you feel good as you think that you've beaten a Porsche but common sense sets in and you know it's not possible.  Not unless you are pushing 400bhp.  Then people go and post this?  Golfs are good cars but not that good.  There's a reason people pay £70k plus for a Porsche 911 and it's not to be beaten by a Golf.

On the golf v porsche topic. My neighbour who was driving a new 997 Turbo black with cream interior. Has just sold it and bought a mkv R32 black with cream interior. Thats a 100k car to a 25k car!! And whats more, he prefers the R32 every time!! More usuable, can get the family in it and still a quick sprint to 60!

As for the matey who sold his 997 turbo for a Mk V R32 and loves the R32 over the 997.  It's obvious that he'd say that to mask admitting he could not afford the 997 due to the credit crunch and all.  There is no reason on gods earth I'd ditch a 997 Turbo unless I could not afford to run it.  Even if you needed it for hoofing the family around you'd get an RS4 and be done with it and not a Mk V R32.

VAG-COM 805.0, Hex Can (can do latest Mk V's) around the Reading/Berkshire area. Diagnostics, Fault code clearance, 0-60 and quarter times, data logging for Beer Tokens.

well from my point of view I love my mk3 Golf 1.8 over my R32.

the mk3,  I can park anywhere,  I can play chicken with rush hour traffic,  don't give two hoots to the plonkers in the 4x4's who insist on making it their right of way when its not,  i can srape the wheels,  i can leave it unlocked,  i can fix it with a hammer.

Its got 5doors so ppl can get in and out without having to clamber in and out.

having a nice car is great,  but its annoying to have to worry about where to park it, not scratching it etc..

Thats exactly what i was thinking, but i would love to be in the position to still be driving an R32 because times are hard!!!

Right, just to clear a few things up.

Please understand that I'm not so stupid as to believe my Golf is quicker, or anywhere near as fast as a Carrera. The point I was raising is that some people in nice cars can get a shock from a Golf and a well timed gear-change.

I'm well aware how fast even the standard Carrera is. At no point did I say I "dusted" the Porsche, or anything similar. I just said that I think he was surprised.

Anyhoo. Good to see I stirred things up a bit...... have a good weekend.

LOL.. i think everyones getting the wrong end of the stick, the original post never claimed that his golf was faster than the porsche! .. As fast as they are, in reality you are never going to get any major distance in a supercar over a remapped golf considering normal road conditions i.e. speed cameras, traffic lights etc.. obviously on a track and motorway its a different story.. everyone knows a 200bhp golf wont be as quick as a porsche or m3, nobodys trying to claim that, but under normal road conditions a porsche or m3 wouldnt be a millions miles ahead as stated by the examples by me and Sam..

EDIT: Sam you beat me to it.. spot on explanation..

    SamPet:

    Define 'similar'?

You've stated the porsche couldn't get away. By implication, aren't you stating that the golf can equal the porsche, given the usual conditions mentioned before.

That's true. But so is a claim that it can keep up.

under normal road conditions a porsche or m3 wouldnt be a millions miles ahead as stated by the examples by me and Sam..

Kind of irrelevant debate then. Its like saying a porsche won't beat a ford fiesta because they're both subject to short roads and speed cameras!
