Hi All,

I've been wondering this for ages, but now I've finished the bodywork on my car, I'm looking to start further performance upgrades.  At the moment, I get a small amount of turbo chatter when I ease off, thanx to something the previous owner has done (not sure if just fitting an induction kit can cause this alone, or if he's done further mods - it's on the standard N75 valve at the moment).

My question is, can the 1.8T be made to chatter in a similar way to a WRC car?  Nice, loud chuffing each time you lift off or dip the clutch?  If it can, what would be required to achieve this on a K03 or K03s turbo?

 and ruin the turbo, VW fitted the recirc valve for a reason

with regards to the turbo chatter yes an air filter alone can do this.. my mate put a budget £25 cone filter from halfords on his audi tt 180bhp and the turbo chatter is amazing.. and really loud.. dont see the point in the dump valve with that sound..

I don't wanna harm he car - just want a way of increasing the chatter sound without hurting it!  Is there an uprated DV that will aid this?

 ive got a n75j valve and a turbosmart duelport is sounds very nice

 i think the HKS SSQV will give you the sound, but its not cheap

Cool.  How loud is this?  I'm hoping that the chatter will be able to be heard clearly a few feet from the car...  I also heard that N75J can hinder the performance slightly and that N75H was the racing valve that is better - is this true?

i got a baileys evo dump valve, k&n pannel filter and drilled airbox, the dump noise is extremely loud and when i ease slowly of the accelerator u got chatter, best of both worlds : D

It's just chatter that I want, although want it to be quite loud.    What's the HKS SSQV then?

Nas got bugger all to do with the chatter you are after?  Removing the dump valve will ease the car onto scap yard pile quicker..

HKS will probably do it or as you have a AGU you can get a blow off although not recommended and wont help performance but will give the chatter..

 the HKS jobbie will do it, I found mine sounded better with the dump valve relocated to the cold side of the intercooler aswell, duno if it was just me but the sound seemed to be a lot clearer

Or you could get a massive turbo conversion wth an external wastegate and a carbonio with the HKS dump valve and then itl be loud as you want lmao.

 turbo chatter is when air is trying to go round the turbo turbine the wrong way, its possible on bigger stronger turbos but the small k03/s wont handle it for long, its sounds good but not good for the turbo, best option is a filter located in the wing/bumper and a forge recirc valve. this is the best option for the car, you shouldn't fit atmospheric valves to any 1.8t at all really, it causes over fueling

 the turbosmart has a screw top so you can get as loud as you want and it loud when fully unscrewed

Blimey - £240!  Glad I was sitting down! 

I've listened to how that sounds and the HKS still sounds far too much like a dump valve for what I want - the sound I'm after is more like this:-

You may get it to do it for a bit but expect to be picking up bits of turbo off the road very shortly afterwards.

turbo chatter is just the sound of the turbo coming to a complete holt in a instance and almost spinning backwards. wrc cars sound like that because of no where for the excess boost escape (no dv).

any recirc valve on a 1.8T and a cone type filter sounds pretty fluttery but its in a complete different way.

dont wast you money of different gear as it just wont get that sound.

if your on a budget a cheap dv and a ebay induction kit or pay a bit more and get a carbonio and a forge 007.

I already have a good induction kit (K&N), fitted by the previous owner, so I get the faint flutter as it is - just hoping there was some way I could massively increase the chatter to WRC kinda level without fitting a big turbo.  Guess that idea is in the bin then...

 WRC cars are fitted with anti lag systems so they don't have any lag at all,not sure about no dv,but the turbo is making boost even on idle.....

One way you could get the chatter sound would be to fit a stronger spring into a forge 007dv,but it WILL shorten the life of your turbo.

 The noise would be way too loud,hell some rally stage's have banned it because of the excessive db it produces.

 my m8 has anti-lag on his 500 bhp cossie!

 that youtube video brings back some good memories of when i had my fiesta turbo 11 yrs ago, it was chipped by turbosystems in stoke and was putting out 175 bhp at the wheels, fitted with a simple cone airfilter and it sounded just like that.

 Im getting it as an optional extra on a simtek ECU slong with launch control, it switches on and off so itll hardly get used really, just a gimick init.

When the driver lifts his foot from the gas pedal the ignition  timing is altered with sometimes 40° or more of delay (retard) and the intake air and fuel supply mixture is made richer. The inlet butterfly is kept slightly open or an air injector is used to maintain air supply to the engine.   This results in air/fuel mixture that keeps getting in the combustion chambers when the driver no longer accelerates. The ignition being delayed, the air/fuel mixture reaches the exhaust tubes mostly unburned. When the spark plug fires, the exhaust valve is starting to open due to the ignition delay mentioned above. Additionally, the exhaust temperature being extremely high, the unburned fuel explodes at the contact of the exhaust tubes. Luckily the turbo sits right there and the explosion keeps it turning (otherwise it would slow down since its intake, the exhaust gases, is cut-off). The effect is vastly lower response times with some downsides:

• A quick rise of the turbocharger's temperature (which jumps from ~800°C to the 1100°C+ region) whenever the system is activated

• A huge stress on the exhaust manifold and pipes (mounted on a street car a bang-bang system would destroy the exhaust system within 50-100 km)

• The turbo produces significant boost even at engine idle speeds

• The explosions which occur in the exhaust tubes generate important flames which can, sometimes,  be seen at the end of the exhaust tube

• Reduced engine brake

you can get that sound, but it will damage the turbo, i blocked a dv pipe just to see and you get that sound, but it really does damage the car

 I recently had my 1.8T remapped by Jason at More-bhp. He checked my recirc valve and said that the chatter I was getting was caused by the RV being worn. He didn't say that it cause any damage to the turbo but I'm sure it won't do it any good...

 I can't see a bit of air going through metal blades doing any damage to be honest, the spindle is free as can be and its just air blowing against metal...has it ever been proven to 'wreck' the turbo? sure the air slows the blades down hence the noise, just like blowing into a fan I ran without a DV for an experiment, sounded well but a little puny compared to the wicked noise of big turbo supras/cossies etc that make it

 different bigger turbos mate, the k03/s is tiny and not as big, and not as strong, tbh its not reccomended but, there is very little if any record of it damaging the turbo, but it can cause running problems and slower spoolup/pick up

 My mates c20let corsa use to chatter when he first had the conversion done but was advised to fix the problem as it wasn't going to do the turbo any good. Sounded mint though.

more chattering!,I love it, cant you tell, lol these guys I think have BOVs but there running so much boost that they cant get rid of all the pressure so some goes back into the turbo...? Im just guessing

the M5 is an absolute joke by the way!! and for a little MK4 bonus Mr Dahlback is booting it about there too. (which sounds like it has a BIG BOV )

you need a "maram" shaft (247 grade steel) to run anti lag or the excess heat will melt it
