    Hi mate,

That's a good guide if your not sure how to go about it. Good find. I'm afraid I still giggle at "crimp" though!

I could be wrong but this post is in the wrong section, you should have posted it in the D.I.Y / How to section. Mods will have to move it for you. Make sure you read the forum sections before you post... no worries, it's an easy mistake to make.

All I will say about soldering is that although it is said to give the lowest resistance and most reliable joint,it isn't always the best way of joining two wires together.Crimping done properly under VERY high pressure will form a cold weld that will melt all the parts together and give a much better joint than soldering ever will.
Manufacturers will never solder inside a wiring loom, partly due to manufacturing costs, but also because a multi-strand wire that has beeen soldered turns into a much more brittle single strand wire, that is more prone to failure.
It is however the best way for the small scale amateur messing about with low current lights etc on his/her own car,the mistake most people make is either not enough heat (you get a dry joint and improperly melted flux can make a worse joint than twisting the wires together),or too much solder travelling too far up and down the wire, also caused by too much heat.

I've looked at every pary of a mk.4 wiring loom at some time and I've never seen any soldering.I've fitted a few heated seat looms and they're all 100% plug and play except for the ignition and illumination wires which I've soldered but if fitted as OEM woyldn't have been.
What I meant was that unless some very last minute changes are made they wouldn't normally solder inside a wiring loom, they would use crimps instead, but not the DIY red, nlue or yellow ones we use.

Ive just fitted a new rear left abs loom into my mk5 cos some idiot had tried to repair it near the wheel end instead of replacing it,  I can confirm that the original wiring to the main loom was soldered.

VW do use solder in certain situations in the harness.  Jimmy didn't we cut out the harness for the heated seat loom for me.  I'm sure there was soldered junctions in that loom.  Thats going back a few years.
