prawnstar: its ok, i bought one when i got the kit, why is this though?
It is imperative that this nut does NOT work loose, since it is used to retain the driveshaft and hub.
However, since this nut is constantly rotating and vibrating it will be subjected to loosening forces.
The original self locking nut would prevent the nut from coming loose, however these properties are destroyed once the nut is removed.
This is why the nut MUST be replaced with a new nut and torqued using the correct procedure (to mantain grip on the driveshaft and to prevent wheel bearing damage).
If the nut did work loose, in the worst case the wheel could unmount from the car.
The torquing procedure is (with the wheel on the ground) ;
- Tighten 12 point nut to 200Nm
- Loosen nut one half turn
- Rotate wheel hub 180 degrees (e.g. use the tyre valve as a marker).
- Retighten to 50Nm, then by another 60 degrees.
