in the middle of replacing the outer drivers side cv boot as its split, i've got the replacement kit and the car in parts on the drive, i've searched but need a bit of help

how do I get the cv off the driveshaft in order to clean the crap out and put the boot on, its a plastic oem boot, not one of those stretchy ones.

i've read its a clip, but cant find a clip anywhere!

On some CV's (not done a VAG one yet) there is a circlip on the end of the driveshaft (the bit that goes through the CV joint), to get the CV off you need to hit it firmly on the flat edge of the CV (near the bearings) making sure you don't make contact with the bearings! you also need to push the driveshaft towards the gearbox at the same time otherwise you may pop the joint out of the gearbox.

By hitting the CV the the joint will compress the circlip and the joint will just slide off.

cool thanks, i took the driveshaft off and came off with one knock, just not enough space in there i guess!

now the new boot is plastic and comes with metal clips, any idea how to close these?

    IIRC, if you are using a VW CV joint kit, you should have the ear type clips;

Your CV joint seemed as if it needed a quick clean.

Did you disassemble the balls/cage and soak in white spirit, clean, dry and then reassemble before repacking with grease ?

bugger it, gave up and bought some screw shut ones!

i managed to get it very clean with some carb cleaner, then blew it dry and greased up, can't be worse than it was.

only problem now is the alignment bolt turned on itself so had to be ground out, but this all is all out of stock, so will have to wait for tomorrow

    thanks for your help.

the outer cv replacement guide on here was a godsend too.

Not quite sure what the alignment bolt is ..., unless it's used to retain the driveshaft in the hub, (rather than a 30mm 12 point nut).

Sounds like the 3 x M8 Hex bolts (N.101.277.07), used to retain the Balljoint to the LCA/wishbone locking plate.

If the balljoint has moved/relocated slightly, you may require tracking.

I think it will have done, the tracking probably needed doing anyway so even though I marked it i imagine it will be out.

those are the bolts, one sheared off and the other turned on itself, luckily those 3 and the bracket are only about £2 from the dealer.

Actually you are pretty lucky, that's probably one of the better places to have a sheared bolt, i.e. a sheared glow plug or engine head/block bolt would be quite painful Ick!.

Sounds like you're almost there now.

Are the boots the same size on either side, I've got a MOT recommend to replace a CV boot as there is a small tear at the narrow end....but he didn't say which side...

AFAIK, the inner CV boot kits shouldn't be sided, neither should the outer CV boot kits.

AJM outer CV boot kit: 3B0.498.203.E but you will also require a new 12 point 30mm driveshaft nut (N.905.876.02)

AJM inner CV boot kit: 1J0.498.201.E

Prawnstar, I forgot to mention that if the CVJ boot kit isn't supplied with a new 12 Point 30mm driveshaft nut, this MUST be replaced.

It is imperative that this nut does NOT work loose, since it is used to retain the driveshaft and hub.

However, since this nut is constantly rotating and vibrating it will be subjected to loosening forces.

The original self locking nut would prevent the nut from coming loose, however these properties are destroyed once the nut is removed.

This is why the nut MUST be replaced with a new nut and torqued using the correct procedure (to mantain grip on the driveshaft and to prevent wheel bearing damage).

If the nut did work loose, in the worst case the wheel could unmount from the car.

    The torquing procedure is (with the wheel on the ground) ;

    1. Tighten 12 point nut to 200Nm
    2. Loosen nut one half turn
    3. Rotate wheel hub 180 degrees (e.g. use the tyre valve as a marker).
    4. Retighten to 50Nm, then by another 60 degrees.

     thanks TR

I did not know the procedure, thats saved me! Does the 200 get it all in place correctly then, and then backing off and keep it tight.

That sounds close to what's happening. I suspect that the nut is finally deformed which assists in counteracting looseness.

Which would support why it must be replaced.

Furthermore, given the wide variances in torque wrench calibrations, angle tightening is always more accurate, providing that the surfaces are clean and ungreased.

     Cheers,

I was only thinking of the narrow end of CV boot, not the inner boot at the other end of the drive shaft is it????

I'll have to jack it up tonight and have a good inspection.

    Paul,

Acually that's probably the best of both worlds, i.e. not having lost much grease, and also getting them both replacedsimultaneously means you don't have to worry about the other side going soon.

If your front wheel bearings have done heavy mileage, it might be an idea to replace those at the same time ?

Don't forget to order 2 x 12 point 30mm driveshaft nuts if they aren't supplied in the CVJ boot kit.

As mentioned, this nut must be replaced each time the drive shaft is removed from the hub,

VW Front Bearing Kit part number (off the top of my head I'm afraid): 1J0.498.625

The Front Wheel bearing kit should include the 12 point 30mm driveshaft nut, so if these weren't special order or you're friendly with parts you might be able to return these.

Would be very interested in knowing what the TPS price of this part is.

Also never get tempted to  put your wheel back on to move your car with the drive shaft off as this will damage your wheel bearing.

And don't crack off your drive shaft nut with the weight of the car on the wheel for the same reason, better to jack up remove wheel and get someone to press the brake.
