from new, a flip key 2/3 button is roughly £160.

Key part is £50/£55, remote is £47ish, and coding most retailers charge half hour labour or £50. At my retailer its usually £157 or so (remmeber takes around 5 days to get the key from germany) hope this helps :)

    Finally built and running! :
    1.8T, TD05H18G turbo'd, 440c inject'd, 3" complete straight-through custom anniversary style exhaust'd, cold air intake'ded, front mount intercooled'e super golf :D!
    Finally dyno'd and running a nice wee 334bhp :)

Why not go second hand for about £30 and then getting someone off here to do it for you..  Where abouts are you?

rattlesnake, thanks as i've been reading about that £160-180 area and all i think is ouch lol

blackmagic20vt, how does the second hand route work on key cutting, remote link and reprogramming etc. i'm based south west, i see you are west midlands, and i'm up visiting in-laws near nec at times.

can this be done without dealer?

basically i'm looking a private car sale, but the seller only has one key. hence two thoughts:

    1. need a spare just in case

    2. want it reprogrammed so the other spare key floating about where ever won't start the car

not sure you can code a second hand key to a mk5

    mk4 yes

but when you order a mk5 from parts it comes part coded already and then its matched to the car

anyone managed to code a second hand key to a mk5?

Used keys are not recodable on cars fitted with immo-4 (mk5 onwards)

Immobiliser 1 and 2 keys can be recoded from used fobs.  Immob 3 can be recoded if the crypto chip is changed on a used fob they cost about £8.

The mk5 key is  one shot (i.e cant use a used one unless the immob chip is changed) as far as I know and it can be purchased from the dealer and then coded to your car.  Either a dealer or member can do that obviously the member services will be cheaper than a dealer.

I got a key off ebay, got it cut by an auto locksmith and then took it to VW for coding......they couldnt code it and even went back to an older version of the software (mine was a 2004 car) to try code it but it didnt work...

SO I paid them the labour charges...got me monies back of the ebay seller and coughed up 160 to VW for a new one!

The coding is for the engine immobiliser a used remote could IIRC be programmed to lock unlock the doors.

As general FYI the car will have come with two keys from the factory if one is missing remember to get the missing key removed from the ECU.

Yes s/h remotes can be coded for a MK5. (I have done one for our MK5):

    1. Open the current key you have.

    2. Buy a replacement (used) key from eBay (etc) that has the same part No. and frequency (MHZ) as your current key.

    3. Buy a new TP23 transponder and blank key blade from Hickleys.com

    4. Get the new key cut at a local locksmith who has a LASER cutter

    5. Find someone with VAG commander and get them to retrieve your SKC (secret key code) so the new transponder can be programmed.

    6. Get someone with VCDS to program the remote and new immobilizer. (eBay cables do not work on the MK5 on wards so you need a genuine Ross-Tech cable)

Total cost (including paying for the services of people with VAG commander and VCDS) should come in at less than £50 - I paid a total of £30, but i have my own VCDS cable.

old_no7's thread will walk you through the process (although this was done on a MK4, it is essentially the same for a MK5, BUT they use a different transponder)

    vwbandit:

does it need to be one that has a new chip that has never been used before?

    Yes

    vwbandit:
and whould a 3 button one be ok for a mk4?

    Yes

    vwbandit:

Possibly, it all depends on the part No. of your current key.

You can't retrieve the SKC with VCDS, for that you need VAG-TACHO or VAG-Commander

Pretty much the same as the MKIV, the only difference being the MK5 uses a different transponder (the eBay ones are no good for the MK5)

If they also say it is suitable for any pre 2004 cars then no it will not work on the MK5 one seller (as1am) had his advertised to be suitable for a MK5, so i bought one and found out it wasn't! but true to his word he gave a full refund (inc P&P) he has now changed his listing to say they are not suitable for the MK5.

thanks. that was the bit which was confusing me. i hope to find a mk5 key only

find a car key cutter, but i can't seem to find one yet in Bristol.

can the new fob be programmed like a mk4, where you put one of the new or original key in ignition and the other in driver door process?

I assume it can, but whilst you are programming the transponder (VCDS) it's just as easy to do the remote at the same time (you can then remove the 'missing' key from the list of keys that will start the car at the same time)

BTW any remote with the same part No. and frequency as your existing key will work, I'm pretty sure mine didn't come from a Golf?

     thanks again

so you need to program 1. transponder 2. remote fob

    what does transponder do?

Yes thats right, the transponder is the small glass tube inside the key half of the remote, the transponder is for the immobilizer (without it the car will start then 'stall' about a second later)

This is why the earlier transponders do not work in the MK5 - the MK5 uses an Immo-4 (immobilizer) whereas the MKIV use Immo-2 and Immo-3
