i haven't the black plastic thing which comes from factory which i've been told may tell you the secuirty code, but maybe for VW Dealer use.

I've seen a key on ebay, i'll PM/email for you advice

R44MS_K thanks in advance (if you can)

only ask, as all the links above say mk5 are different and have more issues. I only have the one remote key.

    checked the code and frequency:

i've taken mine apart to look:
    Back of key:
    HLO 1K0 959 753 G
    42 / 05
    Hella 434 Mhz

brought one on ebay similar to this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-MK5-GOLF-CADDY-REMOTE-FLIP-KEY-FOB_W0QQitemZ300324435159QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item45ecbb34d7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A3%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

    Seller: prudyinc

i've asked timpson about cutting key and said fine, is there anything else i need ask them to make sure?

also is there anything else i need to buy like the transponder as linked above:

    http://hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_list.php?manu=40

bs1 postcode is centre/ park street/ water front and is close by

For security reasons VW will not give me the SKC, lol was a good try to phone and ask but NO!

Anyone around london or close enough willing to read my SKC? Dont mind coughing up some cash.

i assume it comes with transponder.

does anyone know if timpsons use a laser cutter? does it make any difference if they already said they could cut the key?

the seller isn't sure on transponder ;-(

i'm now trying to source transponder or a new blank key with correct transponder

how do you crack open the top half of the key with the blade in it?

i've found on another forum, a member selling just the top part and he thinks it should be fine for a mk5, as he brought it for his but now sold his car and said it was made 2007. only thing is i assume vw produces batches for older models

My local Simpson's use a laser cutter (well they used to - it was away being repaired when i went to them!)

Remove the VW badge (you can get replacement ones on eBay for about £1 each),

Then remove the small screw that is under the badge, then you need to put a blunt screwdriver between  the two halves and gently prise them apart - do this carefully as there is a small spring used to flip the key out (this will need to be wound on the correct way when you replace the key part otherwise the key wont flip anymore).

The only way to know for certain is to try and code it to your car.

     thanks for the advice.

    i've got:

    remote key fob

    new key and transponder unit

ordered a spare transponder from the link you gave me

next up, recieve the key and get it cut and then get it programmed (touch wood that it all works and no parts are waisted, hoping the transponder in the key already will work and re-sell the spare transponder as not sold on ebay)

NB. anyone looking, the blank key which came with mine doesn't seem OEM, so have purchased another. also these non OE probably won't work with mk5's

transponder arrived and so i thought i would try and take the key apart

took the vw badge off, took some hacking away and saw the screw underneath, took that out, but how do you split the plastic apart?

    http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_how_to/a5/mk5keyFAQ.htm

also does the transponder need to be stuck/ glued in?

update, both keys i sourced seem like they are non oem, but hopefully will cut ok and do the job.

    - One niggle is:

can the programming go wrong, where it erases old key and make it all unuseable and the car stranded?
