I dont know about the lead in the car, but ive had a similer problem trying to get a mains charger for the 4th gen nano, standard leads just dont work.
get one of these and all your old leads will charge new generation iPods/iPhones - CLICK (but get it from ebay as they're cheaper on there)

uhhh, no! if the product is faulty and under warranty, Why the flock should i have to get an aftermarket headunit?????
don't be stupid!

You asked what to do, either get a aftermarket headunit or upgrade to the RCD510/RNS510 and get the MDi to get decent integration between the headunit and the ipod
Didn't Apple change the charging pins on the latest ipods ?

that is the radio fitted in the car - RCD 510 and it comes with 2 MDi leads - a USB one and an iPod one as standard. using either of these to connect the iPod/iPhone gives us an error, but if we play a CD for a minute, then it might start working again, it even charges the iPhone as well (when it works!)

anyway if its faulty send if back and get a new one then, why make a post if thats obviously the right thing to do
because i wanted to know if anyone else is having problems with the factory iPod lead and RCD 510. and searching Scirocco Central has found that we are not alone! i just tried here first as i'm on here all the time and had to sign up at SC to make/view posts!
sorry for being a moody bugger, just peeved off that it should work being brand new and not be playing up!
cheers
