guys, yesterday i noticed a whirring noise coming from my engine between 30-50, during the night of me cruisng around lakeside, I was parking up at a roundabout and reversing onto a curve to observe aload of Rear wheel cars drifting, my ever so fantastic sump guard ripped off...It was actually on its last legs and hanging down, Since the cover has been off I have been noticing this noise.

the noise stays even i if i take it out of gear and let it coast.

Im thinking maybe wheel hub, or flywheel.

Jack it up on both sides and check for lateral play, if theres nothing your bearings are fine. I don't think its your bearings anyway, if its anything like my 1.8t then probably your turbo mine always whirls since fitting my 3" decat and straight pipe. As for flywheel I really doubt it unless theres some other reasons for you to suspect it besides the noise, since the noise is still there out of gear it really doesn't seem like it is your flywheel. Your hub does not make a whirling sound at all.

It was a couple miles from lakeside, it was closer to dagenham, near ferry lane.

I dont think its turbo because noise stays when i let it coast, i think the sump guard being off might be playing a part in this, i hear the guards arnt just for physical protection of the sump but also to reduce road noise, perhaps this noise was always there.

Anyway, i been a bit paranoid since i got it remapped couple of weeks ago and after booting the car have noticed new noises!

last week it was a plastic rattle noise in 1st and 2nd when pulling away at low revs, that noise hasnt gone but hasnt got any worse, and now this whirring noise.

Am pondering the idea of upgrading all mounts,hubs, bushes etc, just to make the car more secure and accustomed to the higher power.

is there anyone who has gone through these upgrades? is it an expensive thing and do you reccomend any particular components to upgrade?

all advice is greatly appreciated.

whenn My mechanic was trying to diagose the plastic rattling sound he had the bonnet open and was driving back and forward, I was watchig this and noticed the engine rocking back and forward in the engine, now someone told me that if you fit the R32 dogbone mounnt it will stop this happening, is it not normal for the engine to rock like this or just a common fault with a worn mount?

Hopefully someone clued up on this subject can go into a bit more detail, as I am not much clued up about this.

The engine will rock pretty freely if only the gearbox and engine mount is holding it, sound like your dog bone mount is gone. Did they put it on a ramp for a good look? Did you notice that your gear wouldn't engage nicely? That would be because your engine is swinging back and forth so the gear linkage aint pulling right.

Should look at upgrading your dog bone mount to vf dog bone mounts. Without a good look at your car I cannot give a 100% definate answer but I am pretty confident it is your dog bone. It'ss a cheap job, should not cost a fortune, definately under 1 hour job so at ~£45/hr its alright.

 yeah they had it up and was using a bar to prod and poke things around, they said everything looks spot on, bushes a bit worn but apparently common for golfs.

he didnt see the engine moving, but yeah sometimes when changing gear it catches and sometimes when im giving a bit of a boot i miss a gear...very annoying and doesnt sound healthy at all!

I dont think he saw the engine rocking back and forward.

So do you know where I can get this dogbone mount from and do you know what other parts would be a good idea to upgrade, like bushes etc.

Im hoping to take the car in tommorow to check for the whirring sound, which my brother also suggests sounds like wheel bearing.

On another note I went to vw today to get a price for new sump guard and side attachments and all bolts and fixings.

ive forgotten the exact price, but it came out at like 179 pound!

is this really what im gonna need to pay to get the sump guard? I feel like i should maybe just go for the diesel geek one.lol

it was a safety precauction because of a new virus or some Sh*t.

Do i get the same replacement bearing? do i get bearings for both fronts?

or do i get an uprated bearing? to handle the increased performance.

Well IF one bearing has gone usually you should replace both while your at it, its just my personal experience and preferance. You wont need uprated bearings.

I just hope its nothing more serious than that, dont want to worry you but the sump gaurd aint got anything to do with that noise imo.

Definately need a better look at it, from the sounds of it your dog bone mount is gone, and can be replaced with:

However, it still does not explain the whirring sound, if your dog bone mount was gone it should make a clonck sound. There should be a little movement in your engine when revving it, this is normal. But if your dog bone mount looked fine then focus on the whirring sound because it can cost quite a bit of money to replace everything. Perhaps if you upload a video of the whirring sound we might have a better idea of what we are dealing with here.

 I heard it earlier and it sounds like  a bearing coming from the front, but normally its only one and you can tell which side, but I couldnt tell just the front is all I could get.

 Mechanic says its a bearing, replacing both genuine VW parts, + changing oil and oil filter.(own oil and filter) says im looking at 235 pound all in inc VAT.

what you think of price?

I rung VW and they said 450 quid for same work.

My mechanic is a audi and vw specialist too. So i think its a good deal!

Sorry to highjack someone elses thread, but I have the same issue. My 4Mo has a whirring noise at similar speeds, about 30mph upwards, in and out of gear. Does it when going straight, and turning left it get worse but turning right it disappears. Sounds like it's coming from the front off side but I jacked it up and there's no play as I'd have expected.  Can only think it could be a bearing. Did you get yours changed? Did it sort it?

 It's in for service monday so I'll get them to have a look. Cheers.
