I could be wrong, but I was told that the PEt heater and supplemetary heater are 2 different things. My car (2005 GT 2.0TDI) has the PET heater. I know this because if I set my heater dial to 75% or more of maximum heat, and switch OFF Econ, then I get warm air coming out of the vents within only a couple of minutes. This morinng for instance when the car was iced up, the windscreen was clear within 5 mins or so.

As to the supplementary heater, I think this was an option for Scandanavian countries (where it get really cold), and consisted of a plug socket mounted in one of the bumper grills which you plug into the mains. Please somene correct me if I'm wrong.

As to your main question, it's my understanding that only the 2.0 TDI's have the PET heater ?

 Thanks for your reply Norbreck21a. So is it your impression that the "supplementary heater for the engine coolant" in TDIs is a part of the (optional, although extremely rare) "supplementary heating system"?

I will have to experiment a bit to see if the 1.9 has the PET.

It comes up in the multi function display, (MFD) between the rev counter and speedo, when you press and hold the trip reset (button at the bottom right of the dash display). It shows the milage to service first and then the time to service.

Do you mean, reset the trip mileage? If so, no I don't think it does. If your car is NOT on longlife service, then it shows mileage at which next service needs to be done, if I remember correctly.

If you hold the trip button in until the service information appears, then the trip mileage is restored when you release it. Service information of mileage and time is shown, regardless of service regime.

where is the service mileage shown on? where the trip meter mileage odometer is or somewhere else, as i have highline?

 My info. is shown in my Midline's display. First, mileage to service is shown followed by number of days - at least i think that is the order.

I have a little 'dial' type thing in my arm rest and am wondering what the hell its used for? :\

My only guess is twisting it around to the 'open hole' position blows cool air into the arm rest before going out of the rear vents?  Then if i close the dial. It prevents air getting into the arm rest? :S

In the open hole position you get airconditioning in the armrest. Whatever position its in, it won't affect the rear air vents.

does it always blow cool air if in open position, even if heater is on?

i first thought it was a hole for ipod LOL

as per service check, just tried it and shows full screen on highline

for a second the trip mileage goes zero but flashes back and yes had the ignition on

 Don't know if this has aleady been mentioned but when you lock the car pressing the lock button once the doors dead-lock, ie they cannot be opened from inside even if broken in to. If you press the lock button twice this disengages the dead lock feature and can be opened from inside.

a89 do you know the dead lock name in vagcom? I would like to do what you mentioned.

With the box in 1st, clutch down, and stationary you can floor the accelerator and it will stay at 2900 rpm.

Probably to avoid you over-revving the engine when stationary, but it makes an awesome get away from the lights if you snap the clutch up.

Alternative Sat Nav mounting point.

If you lift the rubber mat out of the little tray in the middle of the dashboard - it exposes a metal panel which you can stick you Sat Nav sucker to!

Can anyone tell me if you can change the display on the car from the amount of miles it can do to Miles Per Gallon instead. So for example when I fill it up it says 350miles, and goes down the more I drive (funny that!).

I've got a 54 plate MK5 Golf 2.0litre GT FSI

^^ JAP... has your car got the low line display.. if you have... you cant enable miles to empty!

 JAP, if you've got the multifunction computer, as I did on my 2004 Golf MKV 1.6FSI, 'SE' model and you have a rocker switch or toggle at the end of your wiper's switch then you should be able to cycle through various screens to observe, instant and average mpg, distance covered in present journey and miles remaining in tank etc. I did not have the Highline computer but was still able to obverve several parameters and of course there are two levels of memory i.e. 1 and 2 both of which can be zeroed by holding in the little button just under the rocker switch.

Really need more explanation.

Also i noticed if you lock the car whilst inside using the button on the drivers door. You can open any door by pulling on the leaver twice, and it opens.

I dont know whether this is a common thing in new cars, ive come from a '78 mk1 golf so things like this are amazing!

That's strange that. I thought that they were fixed interval wipes although I did notice, when I owned a MK5, that if stationary the intervals did lengthen then but not when driving faster - maybe I didn't drive faster when they were on!!

I think I have noticed this on the motorway, just read it in the manual the other day. When it rains, I'll try it out lol.

If the 'Econ' light is 'ON' then the Aircon is OFF ie, better economy, because compressor not engaged.

 same better economy when the heatin is on aswell

 Obviously, again, the heater will appear to be warmer/hotter for any given setting if the aircon if 'off' but the two used together can produce warm de-humidified air when damp cold conditons are prevalent externally or you have brought into the car, damp clothes, for example. These conditions would otherwise cause annoying misting of internal windows in such circumstances.
