    davemarkey:

That nime unit is different to the 'fan fix' as created by Bigal. That nime fix has been fitted by some people on here, and they say it works. It is up to you if you want to get that one, but it is expensive.

Thanks for the quick reply dave, Im not even going to try pass of as i know anything Embarrassed I'd get confused wiring a plug so the home made option is out im afraid, But both units will do the same thing though?

    Thanks again,

    Shaun

They do the same job - the resistor mod converts the excess power into heat to make the fan move slower. The nime one "pulses" the power to make the fan move slower. The advantage of the nime one is you don't need a big heat sink to get rid of the heat. I chose it becuase it's a more elegant solution and personal preference.

Thinking of buying the NIME box.  Has anyone had problems with their aircon not working as reported by j033y?  Assume its just one box for both fans?

Alternatively, anyone know of somebody in Essex/London who can fit the resistor mod?

    Thanks

    Paul

right i read all the soloutions but my fans dont kick in on low speed i dont think but if i leave it running for ages they will pulse on high? but i dont have climate control could somebody correct this and if i turn on air con they both spin

I have manual air con and, up until yesterday, I only had 1 fan speed setting exactly as you're describing.

I bought this https://www.nime.co.uk/nimeshop/showitem.f?itm=2 and it solved the problem. Took me a while because it's the first time i've done it but, with the right tools, it's quite easy.

Usher80 gave me a hand fitting the above kit (Thanks once again fella) as my fans weren't working properly either. Had the air con regassed at work yesterday and the guy who did it said the gas for the air con was only a 1/3 full...anyways, they replaced the gas and i now have freezing cold aircon. Well worth fixing your fans with the above kit and if you haven't had the aircon regassed in the last few years i'd highly recommend it.

    The 4motion has gone...

i have fitted the nime kit, its the easiest and quickest fix. it took me 45mins. its now extremely hot outside, but not inside my car. it works for me and is alot cheaper than going to the stealers.Yes

The Golf has now gone and will be missed :-(

Well I have just had my air con recharged today. 100% better.  Big Smile

On leaving the guy said that one of my fans wasn't spinning.  I did the resistor mod about 2-3 years ago, no problem, all worked well.  Just checked now and both resistors are still working all wires still attached, but the larger of the 2 fans still does not spin.  I applied 12v directly to the fan on both input wires but nothing.  Surprise

Looks like I need a new big fan.   How much are they and has anybody done the job themselves?  Looks a bit of nightmare!

Any help would be much appreciated.

First, I'm in the US, and it is hard to find good help here on VW Golfs.  My wife has the 2000 Golf, and the A/C has not been working for a few months.  So I decided to surf the web to find the cause, and stumbled onto this great place.

Checked the fans, and both fans only work in the high speed, no low speed at all for both fan.  When I turn on my A/C manually, the both low speed fans does not come on.  Next, I took the temp sender socket, and used a piece a wire to connect #1 and #2, this is supposedly give me both low speed fan on...but nothing came on.  Then I connected #2 and #3, and this is suppose to give me both high speed fan on, and both did come on...I can hear the relay.

So I thought, great, I'll do the resistor mod and that should fix it.  I followed the guide completely, and spent the whole day under the car in the blazing sun...got everything connected.  Cut the red/white and connected to resistor, and splice into the black white. (Does it matter which end of the resistor I connect to?  As I don't see any designation?)

Anyways, I turn on the car...ready to bask in the triumphant outcome, and both low speed fans still does NOT work, only the high speed fans.  WHAT THE HELL?  I feel like taking a sledgehammer to this car...I'm sorry...I'm so frustrated and tired.  I repeated the temp sender socket test again, and only the high speed fans come on.  What am I doing wrong?

Can it be the FCM?  And how can I check that is the culprit before I go buy a new one?  I really need your help...thanks!!!  The fans obviously work because they both come on high.

One last question, will at least 1 fan work on low speed if one only do 1 resistor mod?  Or does it require both resistors to be functioning for the low speed to work?  (Just wondering, I did both resistors.)

I have just fitted the NIME kit and it has fixed the radiator problem - hooray!

Not too difficult a job, bit fiddly and two pairs of hands help.

However, I now get interference on the AM Band on the radio whenever the fans are running.

Not sure how to go about fixing?  Could it be the earth?

    All help gratefully received.

    Cheers

I've had a few electrical problems since fitting a nime box a few weeks ago, probably a coincidence but I'm wondering if I dislodged a cable or damaged something . Battery died last week, so bought a new one, but car has died again this morning so looks like a new alternator required. Could I have dislodged a cable to the alternator whilst trying to get the fan module from under the battery tray??

ben56 had the same problem after having new fans fitted recently to his 4Motion. Contact him and ask him what the problem was on his, if he's had it fixed.

Could be just a coincidence though.

Just to add to this incredible thread..

Grease Nipple, on my V5, the V belt is easy to see and obviously drives the aircon compressor. When the aircon is switched off (or 'Econ' ) for Climatronic, the clutch at the end of the compressor doesn't spin round. Switch on aircon and it spins round at the same speed (obviously) as the belt.

I've just received and put in the magic box from 'Mr. Nime' (usual symptoms, no slow speed fans etc.) and everything works fine.

A great many thanks to him, Andymac BigAl and all other contributors for the analysis and solution(s).

     Fawlty

    Thanks for the info.

I have also just fitted the Fan Speed Controller from "Nime", took me 11/2 hours with no probs. I attacked it from above but didn't need to remove the Fan control module to identify the relevant wires as they can be accessed from within the plastic conduit that sit on the front of the battery shelf. Thick red/black wire, which doubles back on its self, for the controller output blue wire and the thinner red/white wire for the fan controller input brown wire.

Many thanks to all thread contributors.

Well, I spent another weekend working on this car.  Finally got the resistor mod working.  Whoever worked on this car before was doing creative wiring where they were stealing power to have the smaller fan blowing constantly (so a lot of lines were cut and spliced), but now I have all the wiring fixed after I finally figured out what the last "mechanic" was doing.  Although. I found all of this out after I had installed a brand new FCM as well just in case.

The good news is that both my low speed and high speed fans are working properly.  Yay!

The bad news is that my A/C is still blowing warm air!!!  FFFFFkkkkk.  The compressor is engaging, so that shouldn't be the problem.  I thought maybe my refrigerant is low, but it is reading full (or even a bit high) on the low pressure port.  I need to get an A/C pressure manifold and check the high pressure port, so it is being shipped.

Any body has any idea why the A/C in not blowing cold air?  At this point, I'm open to all suggestions, I'm confused.

I have done, and helped, with a few of these resistor mods in the last couple of months and, before changing the refrigerant, it was still blowing the same as before.

When Macackau did his fans last month he found that there was still about a third of the refrigerant in his system so they took the old stuff out, put some new stuff in and he said it's now blowing nice and cold.

    Worth a try.

Hi all. I experienced the wonderfull fan problems on my 2003 mk4 golf V6 4motion recently, I am so glad that i took the time to research this problem and in so doing, came accross this site. I would just like to say a massive thank you to anymac's original post, as it has saved me lots of the queens crispys! I followed andy's instructions for the resistor mod and it works perfectly!

Anyway, I suggest to anyone with this problem to follow andymac's original post. You wont go wrong!!Party!!!

Well lads, i fitted my nime fan control unit tonight with a strange outcome?

Ok so the pre Nime symptoms were as follows:
When i started the car be it hot or cold my two fans would instantly spin up to high speed, turning my climatronic on and off made no odds. I done a bit of digging and found the nime unit is supposed to cure the erratic fans, or so i thought.

    Post nime unit fitting:
I fitted the unit as per the instructions, all went swimmingly if i do say so myself, so i decided to test the unit out (please work so people stop looking at my car funny) So anyway i placed the battery back in connect it back up (key in my pocket) and the fans started to spin at low speed? Decided to try the key anyway, into the ignition turn it the fans go back to normal (full pelt) take out the key and they still run on low until the battery is disconnected?

I took the battery out, all the connections are good, fuses are fine, earth is fine, The wires are connected as they should be?

Anyone any ideas? Please tell mr its something small and easy to sort?

The NIME fix only cures the problem of the fans not running on slow speed, because the resistors are burnt out. It WONT cure any other fan problems.

As far as i knew from my earlier post on this thread and reading the replies given, the nime unit makes the fans pulse on low speed? the heat sink one dissipates the energy through heat to get them to run on low speed? Or am i miles out?

Mine will now run on low but at the wrong time, I.e when the car is off and battery connected so I'm hoping it may be a resistor or something?

It may be that you don't have the resistor problem.

Have you had the control module tested and checked all the wires into it?

The slow speed isn't supposed to pulse either. They should stay on constantly but slow. You'll notice the fast speed kicks in every so often though once it's up to temperature.

They are not the problems that the NIME or resistor fix will fix afaik thats a different problem.

Ah Nuts! Could my air con needing a gas be causing it? Any ideas on other problems?

Your fans won't work on the slow speed if your air con needs re-gassing.

One step closer, Will they just not turn at all or, go full pelt?

My nime unit is faulty anyway, it is arcing with the bodywork when the car is turned on, so the job continues.

If i gas my aircon and buy new fans will it solve it!? Im just sick of it at this stage! :(

If the fans are the problem, yes. But it could be something else that's causing it.

If I were you, i'd remove the nime kit, get it re-gassed and see what happens then.

The fans should only kick in on the high speed when the engine is up to temperature and wants to cool down.

Woah, heck of a way to lose an hour of you life reading all this!

So, as i have the problem i see two options:

    1) Nime, now im a little against this as im an OEM fan (excuse the pun Hmm )

    2) £400 for OEM to fail again.

Bt what about non oem fans such as kenwood etc that landrover boys fit?

    Not always £400.00.

I got a new pair of fans for £120.00 from euro car parts, fitted them myself and they are still working well.

They are not OEM so therefore might last longer than the faulty VW fans.Big Smile

Ok i could cry... NIME box fitted, all working well... then on monday after driving around i decide to check all os ok... Hmmm only one fan working.

To cut a long story short, one of the fans has called it a day.

Has anyone got some contact details for any after market fan suppliers? Eurocar parts dont seem to have them listed.

Euro Car Parts dont list them on their website, but if you call them, they have them in stock.

Mine are still working fine. Smile

At work at the mo, so here is a quick guide as I saw it.

    1.  Remove front bumper. (To assist removal of headlight.)

    2.  Remove drivers side headlight. (To assist reaching a screw on the fan cowl.)

    3.  Remove plastic covering sump and bottom of the radiator.

    4.  Remove Aux air pump.

    5.  Unscrew 4 screws holding the fan cowl.

    6.  Jiggle cowl out through the bottom of the car. (Car will need to be Axle stands or on a ramp.)

    7.  Change fans, then refit is the reverse.

It took me about 2 hours.  A reckon I could do it in an 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

If you need any more info just ask.
