As the wiring loom for the bora vents is now almost impossible to get hold of I decided to make my own, here is a short how to on the procedure involved.

The loom can be made utilising the original plug circled above, (part number 1J0 973 119) but you will need to purchase the corresponding sockets from VW (part number 1J0 973 332) and three repair wires for the terminals (part number 000 979 132), at the time of writing this the plugs were unavailable so I had to use another method. I decided to replace the plugs on the vents to enable me to create the loom rather than just splicing the vent wiring directly into the cars wiring system behind each vent.

The materials needed: bought from Vehicle Wiring Products of Ilkeston near Derby

    3m Thin wall Blue/Slate wire 1mm - 26p/m
    3m Thin wall Brown wire 1mm - 26p/m
    3 x 2-Way 2.8mm Mini Connector (If you are not using VW part 1J0 973 332)- 60p each

    3m Black braided sleeve (5 - 7mm) - 72p/m
Cloth Tape (or you could use insulation tape) - £2.47
Crimping Tool (If you don't have one already) - £8.55

Spare terminals for the connectors in case of mistakes 10 of each - £2.00 (total)
Tap connector x 2 (splice with blade connector) - 0.15p each

Earth Ring (un insulated crimp ring terminal pk of 10) - £1.00
This comes to £12.10 + P&P without the crimping tool.

The principals for making the loom are the same if you are using original plugs or the replacements, the only difference will be is that you won't have to change the plug on the end of each vent lead. If you do change the plugs on the vents then crimp on the female connectors to the cables and put them into the male portion of the plug assembly ensuring to keep the orientation of the colours the same in each plug.

Note: With the latch on top the blue wire is to the left when the plug is viewed from the rear, I used this orientation on all the vent plugs then matched the sockets to it.

To make the loom cut lengths of the two cables corresponding to the above measurements and thread braided sleeve over them. Wind the cloth tape around the ends of the braid to stop it fraying but leave enough wire exposed to make up the connections.

Use the male connectors and the female sockets to make up the cable to the above diagram, on the plug on the far left there is only one brown and one blue cable but the other plugs will have two of each cable in them. Ensure you match the orientation of the wires in these plugs to the ones on the end of the vent wires.

On the free end of the final cable cut the braided sleeve back 25cm and on the end of the brown wire (earth) crimp on the ring terminal, on the blue/grey wire crimp on the connector to go with the tap splice.

You should end up with this:

Feed the cable behind the dash securing it out of the way with cable ties and connect each vent plug up as you install them to the plug on the loom.

Connect the earth connection to the earthing terminal under the dash by the steering column:

Clamp the splice to the blue/grey wire that comes out of the dash light dimmer switch then connect the wire from the loom to the splice, this connectioned is the variable output from the dimmer so the vents will dim with the rest of the dash lights.

Connect the plug back up to the dimmer switch and give the vents a test.

If you have a W8 light aswell (or thinking of adding one later) you could put a fourth connector in near to the right hand side of the loom to connect the illumination wire to.Yes

     Plug part numbers:

The part numbers to make up the wiring adaptor for the W8 light are as follows:

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm not ace with electrics, and although I've had cars in the past, the Golf I have now is kind of my project car which I'm trying to do stuff to, and doing it myself when I can (not including clusters because of vagcom or steering wheel)

So basically, this guide is to make a wiring loom which you plug you the Bora vent plugs into? With the one end connecting up to the earth terminal and to the dimmer control to power and control the illuminations?

If thats totally wrong I apologise now.

the repair wires clip into those plugs to give you the means of connecting the wires inside (ie male to female)

"Vehicle Wiring Products" also sell the correct raw VW terminals which will fit into the VW connectors. You just get the terminal without any wire attached, so you can make up any length of loom you want.

Their equivalent of the female VW repair wire 000 979 131 terminal is part number 3-8020 in their catalogue.

The male terminal (VW repair wire 000 979 132) is 3-8010 in their catalogue.

There are a lot of other VW connectors they sell as well - see this page:

    Nice find Greame Yes

The thing I noticed is that at 65p each + P+P they could work out dearer than buying the repair wire from VW which are ~ £1.50 each (two terminals) Confused

...with useless bits of yellow wire attached!Smile

Just means extra splices if you want to run longer wires...and you cannot crimp the water seals correctly to them either (if required such as in engine bay connectors), as they are already crimped!

Surely it would be cheaper for VW to inventory just the connectors instead of great wads of wire (...like they used too)?

I can see the benefit possibly for the very small terminals like those used in the cluster plugs as they would be very hard to actually crimp correctly "in the field".

VW charge about $6 for one of those repair wires over here by the way.

    ...okay....I've calmed down now...Music

Evening all. I have bought some illuminated bora vents and to my suprise they have the female and male plugs and some more wire comming off the male plug. So how would i wire them up?  My idea was to crimp? and solder all the blue and grey wires to some speaker cable then to the blue grey on the dimmerswitch and do the same with brown wires or send the brown wires to earthing points.

Can anyone suggest anything better or am I on the right path. Also does anyone know where I can get a crimping tool and soldering set for the job.

    Cheers in advance.

Im sorry if this question has an obvious answer, but google images isnt helping me -

The w8 light is set into the headliner, right?  Im not understanding what the mod with this is - dont all golf have them, and whats different with the bora one?

One more question, which i havent been able to immediatly work out from the above -

I see those crimp connectors in the original post that 'puncture' the original loom for extra feeds.

Is is possible to install the bora loom in such a way as the process is really 100% reversable?  I meen can the live and earth be got via a try connector somewhere, rather than irreversably tapping into the existing looms?

Is that what oldno7 is saying above with "That's correct, if you buy the plugs from VW then the wiring loom is totally plug and play" ?

...oh, and one last thing -

ive just had a look on ebay "complete items" and it seems like people are paying silly money for the vent sets - in some cases £30 more than what ive seen in the archives here as being the new dealer price!

Is that because the prices in the archives here are old, and the current price of the parts has risen a load?

Im wondering if anyone has done all this recently, and got up-to-date figures on the conversion using all new parts?

£80 is about the going rate for the vents nowadays. The W8 light has LED downlights compared to the standard Golf/Bora light which doesn't. Also the icons are illuminated

The process is reversable, all it would leave on the + wire on the original car loom if you removed it all is a small nick that wouldn't be noticable unless you went looking for it

Not too sure as I used some ring terminals that came with a crimping kit I have, It was a blue terminal (I removed the blue sleeving) and had a center diameter of about 5.5mm and I don't think the external diameter really matters too much.

The only place to get the vent loom is to make it, or get someone to do it for you.

The W8 loom is available on Ebay.de or Kufatec.
