Hi , a few days ago i read a thread on an audi tt short shifter, and as i had the top of my gearbox visible as i had to change some plastic bushes which house a link lever on the gearbox, i thought great , might as well add this mod in as well, any way i bought the short shifter from my vw dealer and fitted it, its GREAT!!!!! what a cheap oem mod!, if your thinking of doing it , do it, it costs £19~ plus vat and fits straight on!, here some pics of the shifter and during fitting!

    nice shiney new hockey stick!

the reduction in throw is due to the pivot in the photo, you can see its been moved over a few mill,s

old shifter removed!, just take off the 13mm nut and then slowly wiggle the old shifter of the shaft, the shaft is `keyed` so that the new shifter goes in the same place

    tt shifter fitted!

as this is an oem mod, the gears go through great, no clunking or any excessive force needed, any advice just ask!.

    Thanks

    Hi hz2921,

Look's like a good cheep mod, how much shorter does it make it?

Did you get the part from a dealers? if so what part/part number did you ask for?

    sorry for all the questions

    Cheers

Hi Greg the part number that i used was 8N0 711 046A , the throw is reduced by about 20-30% , you will notice it!, the part was ordered form the stealers!, you may have to check on another thread regarding the fitting of this short shifter on a tdi though as the weight at the top of the short shifter may hit your battery tray, tdi,s seem to have a bigger battery and so a bigger battery tray as well, check what part number is fitted on your car at the moment and let me know.

Hi Mate, the good thing about this mod is that the feeling of the gears is still great, only less throw compared to the old shifter, its about a 20-30% less throw, it is noticable!, the oart number that i used was 8n0711046a , the part number for a 6 speed i believe is different, also the part numbers have changed for some reason , but the dealer should be able to cross link it to the new part number.

    Thanks

Hi Mate, if you look at the red arrows youll be able to see where the short shifter reduces its throw, its only a few millimeters, but it does make a 20-30% reduction on throw.Big Smile

Hi ,yes youve got the ball and socket connections, the newer version with the circlip should still fit as they supply a new black adjuster with the tt short shifter, youll need part number 8N0 711 046 , this is for a ball and socket version and if youve got the circlip version then just add an `A` to the end of the part number!, someone may have to be a guniey pig to try it out, i,m availalbel to help you fit it if you want some moral support!!

    Thanks

im confused my mate says this !?:

" 8N0-711-051 for pre-02 5 speeds (ball and socket style cable connection) 8N0-711-051A for 02+ 5 speeds (pin style cable connection) 8N0-711-051-B for all 6-speeds hope this helps "

     does this make sense ?

Hi , ive definately got part number 8N0 711 046A for mine as ive got the pin version, but they have changed the part numbers , so your mate could well be right, either way you need the ball and socket version, if your friend works in the dealers, ask him if he could order one in and compare it to my picture, if its the same as my tt short shifter then thats great!!!., straight fit!

Nah, you only need the shifter, it,ll come with a new black adjuster anyway, , you may want to get a new securing bolt, as they do get rusty!,but before taking it from the dealer check that the pivot point is the same as in my picture!.

    Thanks

Thanks. It's funny how these things jumpout at you when you know what you are looking at :) thanks for the Diagramatic answer. I'm thinking of fitting as part of my gear linkage broke at the weekend but when i went back and looked at it, I have different connectors onto my gear box, part number 1jo 711 256 which seems to be different to all those discussed in this thread. I've only driven the car 13 miles home from the garage! Perhaps I should concentrate on actually getting it working before I start modding things! :o) Thanks again.

Right , my mate has the same gearbox as yours with the ball and socket and he ordered the part number which didnt have an `A` , but when he got the part it was the one that ended with the `A`, this shouldnt be a problem as the black adjuster should still fit on with no problems as the diamter of the gearchange cable is the same, hes going to have hes fitted this week and i,ll let you know how he gets on!, then all you have to do is order one and quickshift away!!!!!!Big Smile
