Hi Folks, thought I would share some info with you all. After a recent Heated Seat Element failure and stupid quotes from the stealers to replace, I thought I would give my DIY skills work out.

I was unable to find a link on here with pics on how to replace step by step, so here's my effort and I hope its useful to you all in case you want to avoid a large bill for some one else to do it for you.

First, disconnect the negative lead from the battery, failure to do this will result in the Airbag light coming on.

Slide the seat full forwards (in my case the Drivers side) and remove the two plastic caps and screws.

    Then remove plastic covers.

Slide the seat back fully back.

At the base of the front of the seat in the middle you will now see Two 13mm nuts, remove these, care in needed as these can be very tight.

Carefully slide the seat backwards until the rollers at the back of seat appear out of roller housing.

Tilt the seat from the front so that the wiring can now be seen. Disconnect the green plug (Heated Seat supply) and the yellow plug (Airbag supply) and the plastic retainer plug. Move wiring loom out of the way.

The seat can now be safefully removed from the vehicle.

Remove screws from the side and front of seat and remove plastic trim.

Once the plastic trims have been removed, the plastic strip at the front and back which holds the fabric onto the seat base can now be unclipped.

Once this has been done the fabric can then be peeled back to expose the metal retaining clips on either side of the seat base, unhook these using a pair of long nosed pliars but be extemly careful not to tear the foam cushion. There are three metal rails that need to be unclipped.

Remove fabric from velcro fastening from either side of seat cushion. The fabric can now be fully removed.

Note: The burnt patch where my element had failed and gone open cicuit.

Tip: Mark around the seat elemnt with a marker pen, this will help when fixing in new element.

The old heated seat element can now be removed from the cushion, be careful not to remove too much cushioning as the Heated element is fixed in place by double sided sticky tape.

The cushion can now be completly taken out so the power plugs can be removed.

Disconnect the female side of the green connecting plug from base and push through to release, disconnect white plug from seat base (this plug is also the supply for the back seat element in seat.

The element can now be completly removed and the new element is now ready for fixing in.

Carefully locate the new element in place allowing enough of the element to fix in between gaps in cushion, this will allow enough give in the stretching of the element once the seat is sat in. Remove paper stips to allow element to be glued in place and fix in place.

Reconnect the power plugs in place allowing enough cable at the back of seat for streching.

Refitting is basically a reversal of the above, be careful when reconnecting metal rails on seat fabric, this is a very tight fit.

Total time taken about 5 hours but time was allowed for taking these pics.

I hope this info is of use to anyone that needs to replace a heated element.

Personally I'm really chuffed with the results and I've saved myself a shed load of cash, enough to decorate the kichten as I've just bought my own gaff!

    Any comments are most wellcome.

    Cheers

    Dave

Heater element set me back £48 from the stealers, if you know anyone who works at Bentley you can get 10% off on parts, that brought mine down to £43.20p.

    Hope this helps

good thread. i've been thinking of retro fitting heating elements but didn't know how to remove the covers.

i have also read that the heating elements for heated fabric seats are not to be used to heat leather covered seats as they will overheat and prematurely fail, does anyone know the part numbers for the elements for leather covered seats?

I don't see no reason why not, but it would be worth checking with the stealers that the elelment part codes are the same. If they are then the fitment sequence should be the same.

    great guide!

when i went to the stealers, they told me there are 3 elements per seat. did you find this when playing around? i was wondering how you knew which element failed?

ive had this same problem since i bought the car, but it is intermittent.

    thanks,

    Luke

This is my next mod for the car. Might do it myself then do my Mum's.

The whole kit from VW Pompey is just under £200,- with £150,- per seat for fitting.

    Thanks Luke

As you problem is intermittent, I would check the thermostats first by swapping them over to see if that cures the problem, also check the connections under the seat as well.

There is two elements per seat, one for the base (which is usually the first to fail) and one for the back.

Testing the elements is fairly straight forward, all you need is a simple eletrical multitester.

    Disconnect the battery.

Unscrew the nut at the front base of the seat (10mm I think) then slide the seat towards the back of the car so that the seat rollers are out of the rails, this will allow you to tilt the seat backwards and gain access to the block connectors to the seat elements, test each circuit for continuity, its usually the base element that fails due to more wear and tare getting in and out of car. As you can see from my pics there was a break in the element wire where it had burned out through becomming weak.

Replacing the element is easy as it is held in with double sided tape, the time consuming bit is breaking the seat down to get to it, I would recommend taking the seat out completely as I did and work from the comfort of your own warm house and take your time stripping it down, this job when done is really a pat on your own shoulder and will save you a shed load of hard earnt beer tokensYes

Very timely that I found this! Mine went last night and is very frustrating! And at £48ish or whatever the figure was is a good price!!

What is the easiest way to know what element of the 2 has gone?

EDIT: Now that I have learnt to read properly, I now know I need a multi-tester!

Just contacted my local VW Parts guy as both my girlfriends elements have gone (doh!) and he has given the element part number as 1J0 963 555 K; at least for my girlfriends GT TDI.

Guess I'll be having some fun this Easter weekend then. Thanks for an excellent guide though - it'll hopefully make it a little easier!

     Nice guide...

    But Im some what stuck...

My Golf's got heated seat switches, but the do nothing, seats dont warm and the switches dont light up. Are they supposed to?

Then moving under the seat I only have 2 wiring loombs.  One from the car with a yellow plug (Air Bags?) and ont from the seat with the plug cut off :( its got 3 wires, Blue black and brown.  My initial thought was soem one had cut the plug off the seats heating loomb as it was not to be used.  But then I read this and found out there should be 3 sets of wires :(  Anyone any sugestions?

Both front seats are the same.

Lastly Ive got the original paperwork so if anyone knows the dealer code for heated front seats I can check if they were one of the options fitted as new.

im looking at doing this with the help of my bro in a few weeks time, vw preston have quoted £58.66 for the element including VAT. one question, if i take the seat apart and remove the negative battery lead first as mentioned in the thread, is it ok to leave the seat out of the car an the negative lead disconnected for  a few days, reason why is im only ordering the part from vw once I have checked which element is faulty, the part will take a couple of days to arrive from vw, as vw said they would not refund a returned part even if it remains sealed. dont want to risk loosing £58.66 if its the wrong part, know what i mean.

My understanding is that you will get an airbag warning light!... if you get the warning then ALL the airbags are OFF...

I swaped my interior today! - all went in well I disconnected the battery not faults or warnings...
