to get the extra thread do you need to take out the plate as in http://www.nclh.org/car/coilover_howto/ ?

I've got the same issue with hardly any thread to tighten the top most nut. I haven't got a extra plate at all.

Just spring cap, bearing then nut to hold it all down (I've tighted up) then I put top mount on and push up through the strut.

I get about 2-3 full turns only, would this be ok? Or is something wrong? I'm going to buy brand new topmounts and bearings from VAG tomorrow and see if this makes any difference.

2- 3 turns? No, that is not enough. You will rip it off at the first bump!

Something doesnt sound right. Can you post some pics of the set up pls? Should look like this (or are you talking about the bit beneath?):

     Have yo uread this?

    http://nclh.org/car/coilover_howto/

Essential reading if you are going to do a coilver conversion, or even just to get you old sed suspension off.

How have you get the adjustable platform set? Can you lower that down to give you more room?

Got a bit excited and took it out for a spin last night, everything seems fine did do some harsh bends. Pass side tyre rubs a bit, this is prob due to oversized tyres which will be sorted soon.

Here are some build up pics which I took to post.....

Everything in pieces for building it up.

spring and helper spring in place

fully tightened this is the amount of thread I have left at the top

about 5 -6 turns Drivers side

also 5- 6 turns passenger side

this is how it sits (pass side)

hi.i may be wrong here but that nut shouldnt be there.the bearing sits directly in contact with the large rubber piece and then that nut goes on . then you offer it up into place and put the top plate on followed by the locknut.thats why you dont have hardly any thread left to use the locknut properly. if im wrong then please put me straight as i only fitted my 4th set 3 weeks ago !!

Looks built wrong to me, take that flanged nut off, put the topmount on then replace that nut

then put it in and stick the topnut on

Get rid of that nut and refit the strut.

I done the same thing when fitting the first set I done as the standard shocks that came off had a nut between the spring cap and bearing. I knew it wasn't sitting right so it was removed and it all pulled together fine after that. Yes.

You will find by looking at it there is not much thread once the rubber bit is on. Its a bit tricky to get lined up, but get a jack under the balljoint and jack it up into place then put the top nut on as per 2nd last picture Yes

I have what seems to be the same problem except I had my coilovers fitted by a garage so not sure if it is to do with the way they have been fitted. Below are the pics of how it is assembled in reverse order:

This is how it looks fully assembled:

With the top nut and plastic cover removed:

And with the bottom nut removed:

Reading all of the above, I'm a bit confused of whether that bottom nut should be there or not....any advice would be appreciated since I am probably going to order new coilovers on monday because I don't feel safe driving the car with it like this... both nuts have been coming loose after only a few miles of driving so the car is now off the road

    Thank you,
    Faisal

Cheers Lowell, I'd really appreciate that

Its far too dangerous the way it is and I'm not driving the car until I can get this resolved.... Either it is fitted incorrectly or I got a faulty kit....If it is faulty I'll be ordering some AP's tomorrow

Just for reference, these are the hottunings from ebay.... I know lots of people on here have fitted these themself so any observations from those would be appreciated

    Thanks, Faisal

I don't think the bottom nut is required on coilovers, On every set I've fitted, there aint been enough room so I've not fitted it. Never had a problem Yes.

Thanks a lot for the pics LowellYes

Azzle, removing the bottom nut would allow the top nut to be secured fully... from your experience, I take it that the one nut is strong enough to hold everything together? Also, did you use a spring washer beneath the nut?

Thanks for your help so far guys, I'm really hoping I can fix this otherwise I have to shell out for new coilovers and labour to get them fitted once again

Yeah I think it's gotta be worth a try... I've taken the most extreme measure to secure my life atm....just not driving the car which is depressing me big timeSad

I was going to change the front coilovers but been searching high and low to fix this because I can't really afford to swap them so the one nut option has got to be worth a try

shouldnt be too hard to remove the strut once you drop the hub and wishbones it all comes out pretty straight forward. i only learnt this from changing my brakes.

I'd love to learn how to do it myself but wouldn't like to try without having someone about who knows how it should all be done... so i leave it to the pros when it comes to things like suspension because it could go horribly wrong if i make a mistake

my philosophy is simple. write down whatever u do as you do it and take pictures. if it goes wrong and u cant put it back together pay someone to fix it. worse case is uve just wasted soem of your time but its been a free fix.

Right, just went out hoping all my problems would be solved...but no luckSad

I removed the bottom nut and then placed the plastic cover on followed by the bolt, but the bolt would still not attach by all of its threads:

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do next....could there be something underneath affecting this? Or should I cut my losses and ditch the hot-tunings? I'd really like to make these work but it's killing me not being able to drive my car

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys Lowell and Azzle, it's much appreciatedYes
