Hi everyone.

A group of us at the UK TT Forum (www.tt-forum.co.uk) have been having problems with our DSG.
One of the most common faults seems to be with the Mechatronic Control Module failing in the cars.
Symptoms of this include the car not being able to select any gears, or sticking in a particular gear.
A lucky few have had them replaced under warranty, but some have also then needed their gearboxes replaced at a later date.

I myself am currently in the process of forking out £661 towards the cost of my replacement control module, due to me finally getting Audi UK to contribute 60% towards the repair as a goodwill gesture, and my dealer doing the repair at "warranty price" (i.e. no VAT).
The normal dealer cost for parts and fitting is £1755.09
Incidentally, the cost of replacing the gearbox is approx. £5,000.

My fault occurred when doing an emergency stop from 30mph to avoid hitting two pheasants who decided to wander on to the road. The car lost all power and wouldn’t drive as it couldn’t select a gear.
If this had happened on a motorway, I could have been involved in a serious accident.

My car is an 04 plate, which is now 3 and a half years old, and has only covered 33,000 miles
According to Audi UK, my car is "old" and I should expect some electronic failures.
I paid £23,000 for my car, and have owned it for just over a year.
I don’t see why I should have to pay for what is obviously a defective electronic part that should last the life of the car.

Hundreds of TT owners have had problems with dashpods in older cars, which Audi were charging £700 to replace. A large number of the TT Forum member-base logged complaints with Watchdog, and we were successful in getting Audi to admit the parts were inadequate and to re-imburse those who had already had to pay for a new dashpod, as well as offering to replace dashpod failures free of charge in cars up to 5 years old.

We feel that there is a similar problem brewing with the DSG equipment that has been used not only in our TTs, but in a large number of cars across the VAG range.


If you have had a DSG related problem and have been made to pay for repairs, can you please log details of your problem with Watchdog on the link below.
Similarly, if you have had DSG problems which have been replaced under warranty, can you also please log details of your problem with Watchdog, letting them know that you are unhappy about the inconvenience this has caused, and are worried about the gearbox failing again in the near future.

The more people who register, the better chance we have of getting our money back and getting Audi to admit there is a problem with their DSG boxes.

Cheers for the info, didnt relise there were so many having this problem, I have heard this before on R32's, I take it the TT has same engine or is the 2.0T having the same issues, I have had no problems with mine yet and still under warrenty but don't fancy the heavy price tag for the new mechtronic unit 

My boss had a problem with his TT a few years back doing 60 and decided to put itself in first gear said it was like hitting a brick wall took them 4 weeks to get new box he give them the car back after a month never had dsg again

I've personally never had any probs, with any of the DSG cars I've either owned or driven.

Appart from getting used to certain "quirks" in the way the DSG box works, I find it absolutely superb, and would never want to go back to any other kind of box.

 I have a 2004 MKV Golf 2.0 GT TDI DSG (out of warranty) and I have just experienced loss of power and the gear selector P R N D S indicator in my Highline display flashing as shown in the YouTube clip.  My car has only done 29,000 miles and it was sudden with no warning what so ever and luckily I managed to pull into a side street and make a video clip on my mobile.  I eventually switched the engine off and allow the car to rest for a few minutes.  When I restarted it, all was ok but I drove home very cautiously.

Recently I noticed that when I was in rush hour traffic, creeping forward and keeping with the flow of traffic, the gear selector display showing which gear your in disappeared and re-appeared after a few seconds.  I was lucky that the person behind didn't run into me.  I'm not sure if this is a sign of worse things to come and I hope not.  I checked the owners manual and it says that either the dual clutch oil has either overheated or there is a problem with the DSG system and has to be looked at by a VW dealer.

I certainly don't like the idea of forking out for a replacement gearbox or a Mechatronic Control Module.  I hope this is a one off, though I will probably need to seek advice from a dealer.  I had a Multi-Function steering wheel with DSG paddles retro-fitted sometime last year and use the paddles to change up quite frequently, do you think that using the paddles has accelerated any potential problems with the DSG system at all?  Let me know what you all think.

Hi there,

I got VW Assistance involved and they plugged in their diagnostic equipment and found an error.  The fault was "Unexpected Mechanical Gear Disengagement.  Sporadic."  Sounds very expensive and the assistance guy says it could be a gearbox change, but I mentioned could it be electronic?  Could be as he got me to drive to my local VW dealer and on the way the gearbox was changing gear ok, but failed again about three-quarters of the way there as the assistance guy was following to the dealer. I asked whether it was a common fault and he told me he heard of a few on Audi A3's, but it wasn't common (I'm not too sure if that is true).

As my car is now at the dealers, I hope that the dealer and VW as a goodwill gesture help towards the cost of any repairs.  This has put me off VW cars and automatic gearboxes now.

Went to check on my car today and found out that the dealer performed a software re-program for the DSG gearbox.  They said everything was ok and I returned the hire car that VW assistance arranged for me, only for my car to fail on my way home about 2-3 miles after collecting it.  I called VW Assistance yet again and they told me the drive back to the dealer I collected my car from.  Just as I started, the car failed again about a quarter of a mile as the assistance guy was following me to the dealer. I'm sure that I will have a fight on my hands with the dealer and VW as my car is out of warranty.

I hope it is some temperature sensors in the DSG that monitor the gearbox oil temperature that needs replacing or something.  I just hope it isn't expensive.

When did your warranty expire?

They 'should' be kind enough to look into it for you under a good will guesture, its not something that should go wrong in or out of warranty!

I'm thinking the same. This is starting to turn into a nightmare story.

The warranty on my car ran out in July 2007.  I do hope that VW and the dealer can sort out a good will gesture and fix my car.  At the moment I'm carless.  When VW assistance followed me to the dealer yesterday (after 6PM Service has closed), they told me that they couldn't provide me with a car and the dealer has to sort out a car for me as it is classed as a repeat repair.

I was certainly p*** off when I called them this morning and they told me they had no car at all for at least two weeks.  They still are looking at my car and have no new news at all.  All I have heard is that they are trying to replicate the fault whilst driving the car.  They told me that when the fault occurs there should be a fault code, but turning off the engine and back on clears the code.

I didn't even get the chance to fillup the car with diesel when I collected it yesterday and I'm not sure if they will run my car dry and leave me with no fuel at all.  With my car in its current state, it is unsafe to drive anywhere and I couldn't get my car to a petrol station to fill up.  I hope they can spare some fuel for me as they will certainly use up all of my fuel testing and trying to replicate the fault.

I will keep you all up to date.

- i think they could have some good advice there for you, maybe the best way of going about it should your VW decide not to help share this 'problem'.
