    Hiya

im just curious if anybody has any tips on how best to climb a steep incine in a 1.6 fsi with a six speed auto?

My previous car was a nissan micra automatic ahh bless but he was a right little tearaway and would accelerate up the side of an officeblock if asked, however heinrich aint as willing to climb hillsSad

I luv the car apart from two things one being the gearbox the other the heater(but more about that in another thread)

I can only drive autos but every other one ive driven has either the ability to climb hills ok in drive or a specific low gear for hills but the golf does neitherSad

The handbook suggests going into tiptronic to select a higher gear but when i do that its allready in 6th gear so nowhere else to go?

If i try an accelerate the revs go wayy too high and i fear damaging the box sometimes it catches itself up but when your on a hill being tailgated and you cant get any more acceleration whats a girl to do?

Any ideas? i feel like telling vw the cars not fit for purpose afterall a car that wont climb a hill is no good to anybody, ive had the car since new and its only four months old now.

Is this a common trait with the six speed auto or is there a specific driving style i have to adopt to pull it up hills more rapidly?

By why to high I assume you mean into the 5,000-6,000rpm range? Labouring the engine is as damaging as over reving..

The electronics will not allow you to over rev the engine, if you need to go faster up a hill change down a gear or press on the accelerator harder to "force" the electronics into kicking down a gear automatically..

What its meaning is you select a gear below current, to increase revs which increases power etc. So if on a level road in 5th gear with a very steep climb approaching it may be required to drop into 4th just before and using more revs, climb the hill in turn keeping the car at the same speed. If very steep an additional drop to 3rd might be needed

yep I agree your not going to get up a steep hill in 6th gear, I don`t think an F1 car could even do that.

The car decides how much abuse the autobox takes and where its ultra safe limits are set. You will do well to break a modern auto box if you tried to, let alone indulging in a spot of kickdown.

If it is struggling, the car should drop a cog of its own accord, and another as necessary to keep speed/momentum up hills ie 6th to 5th/4th or 3rd if necessary.

Putting it in tiptronic and 6th won't help a climb up an incline! You need to go DOWN the box as you would with a manual. Engines on autos always sound more laboured because of the way they make the engine work a little harder.

I can't comment on a Golf Autos but my BMW steptronic auto is spot on, and always has the brains to choose the right gear for the occasion, or offer the option for you to decide if you so feel.
