In response to being asked this by a number of people who want to know what happens if your car has been delocked and the remote locking stops working,is it the end of life as we know it?

No it isn't because we can hide a magnetic reed switch as shown below behind any piece of plastic trim anywhere on the car,and all we have to do is hold a magnet near to it to unlock the doors.

    .

This is larger then life size, and they are typically only about half an inch long, and work when the contacts close up and complete the circuit when in the presence of a magnetic field,Maplins are a good source of these such as THIS one,but make sure you always get a normally open or N/O one.

You need to remove the drivers door card and locate the multiplex module as shown below, this is the only place we can pick up the central locking signals still in a good old fashioned negative pulse style before they are converted to CAN-BUS.

The unlock wire can be found on pin #4 of the multiplug as shown below, and is normally GREEN/RED,but could also be GREEN/BROWN or YELLOW/GREEN,but no matter what colour is it will always be on pin #4.

It can also be found where the loom runs towards the back of the car, which can be a bit easier to connect to.

We can test this by connecting it to ground,if we have the right wire the doors will unlock and the windows will wind down if we hold it to ground, and of course only if your car has total open/close fitted.
If you do this before your car is delocked even better,as the wire should go fully to ground or 0 volts when we turn the key to the unlock position, this can be done using the techniques in my "How to test" guide a little way down this section.

We need to connect a wire to this which will be connected to one end of the reed switch, the other end can be connected to any conveniant earth point, now if we hold a magnet near the reed swtch the doors should unlock and the windows come down if we hold the magnet there.

I'll leave it up to you where you hide the reed switch, but as already mentioned it has to be behind plastic (glass is also good) but not metal,it would be a good idea to make it somewhere that it isn't obvious what you're doing to get the car unlocked.

    Chris.

P.S. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH REASONANBLY ROBUST,IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO CAUSE DAMAGE BY CONNECTING TO THE WRONG WIRE,SO YOU DO ANYTHING I'VE TALKED ABOUT HERE ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK,IF IN ANY DOUBT PLEASE SEEK THE HELP OF AN EXPERT.

Absolutely anywhere metal on your car that is earthed would be good, that's the beauty of using the chassis as the earth return.Or you could use the thick plain brown wire on pin #10 of the same connector and run any thin twin core to the reed switch, even cheap speaker wire will do as it will be carrying next to no current.

     Chris

I have done the unlock switch and all is working! The guide really was spot on and the whole thing really easy.

The only thing I have noticed is that when i use the "hidden switch" to unlock the drivers door, once I get in the alarm goes off (I have the full alarm with sensors etc)

Now instinctivly I just press the unlock button on the key fob as, well, its quite loud and everyone looks to see what your doing!? If I was to put the key in the ignition and turn it on woulkd this stop the alarm?

I know your probably wondering why I dont just try it but didnt want to damage anything etc so thought Id ask first!

    Cheers

I guess you mean a Scotchlock connector? I'd much rather you didn't,because if you don't use them properly they're worse than not connecting the wire at all,and can damage the wire you're connecting to.In principle there's nothing wrong with IDCs (Insulation Displacement Connectors) as computer ribbon cables use lots of little IDCs,but on cars they cause more problems than they solve.
You'd be better off either learning how to solder if you can't already,or strip off about an inch of the insulation from the wire, poke a hole in the middle of the wire so that half the strands run on one side and the other half run the other side, push your new wire through this gap, close the gap up and wrap the new wire as tightly as possible round it,and then use insulating tape to bind the joint as tightly as possible.

You have 20 seconds to put the key in the igntion and turn it on if you unlock from the drivers door other wise the alarm will go off,or it sounds instantly if you unlock from any other door,or open the boot or bonnet. That's why we have to do this in the drivers and not the passengers door.

    Hi Chris,

Is there a wire that controls the total closure and opening of the windows and the sunroof without unlocking the doors? I ask because I want to be able to connect it to the external switch on my HU so that I can wind all the windows down and back up with the HU as I can't have autowindows by remote.

Or would my only bet be to do as you have described here?

If so which wire allows  for the windows to go up?

    Thanks

    Joe

The same lock and unlock wires also control the total open and close functions,if you wire that up as shown and hold the magnet next to the reed switch instead of taking it away when it's unlocked, the windows will roll down, the same for the lock wire, all you have to do is extend the pulse and Robert will be your aunties husband.

So......colours will be different on different year cars, but lock will always be on pin #24 and unlock on pin #4.

I don't see how you're going to do that from your headunit though, and why you say you can't do it by remote?

    Chris.

My CCC is strange and Kalu and Ard had not seen one before so could not code it. I have a Kenwood DNX7200 which has an external switch wire for garage doors or the like but I have read on a forum somewhere that some people were using it for control of things like neons or lighting, there is no current through it simply a programmable switch that allows either a pulse or on off connection of two wires. So I had the idea of using it for this. I have to close all the windows and sunroof induvidually and vice versa. So this means i can get in the car, push the switch on the HU and all the windows will go up or down.

    Does that make sense?

I sort of see what you're getting at,but if you have to get in the car to do it,why not just use the switches that are already there for this very purpose?

If you have total close/open by holding the key round in the lock, why not a fit cheap alarm that allows you to extend the lock and unlock pulses to give you remote roll up/roll down instead?

    Patch:

Yes,but bearing in mind you would only use this for emergencies and not every time you get in the car,Mr.Scumbag and his mates aren't going to start swiping every car they see with a magnet, they'll put a brick through the window,or attack it with a centre punch. And even if you have to do this to ge in the car yourself, don't forget that unless you put the key in the ignition within 20 seconds and turn it on,the alarm will go off.

    Chris.

P.S.You never said if you got your 6 X 9s working properly doing what I suggested?

Its more about being able to do them up to be honest, its just a pain to make sure that all the windows are closed, this eliminates the problem. The only problem is that it will lock all the doors...

Is there any way to do it without locking the doors?

You can put the windows up for something like 1 minute after you've turned the ignition off,you need to ground the individual "up" wires that come out of the switches on the drivers door panel within that time period, after that you have to do it the old fashioned way.
Or you could use one of THESE instead.

is it possible to connect a lock? I know the microswitch would be hidden and only I would know about it, but it would play on my mind that it could be opened by anyone with a magnet!

Yes it would be possible for anyone with a magnet to find it,but as they won't be looking for one,how would they know to start looking? Don't forget it's only there for emergencies if your remote doesn't work.so with any luck you'll never need to use it,but don't really understand what you mean  by connecting a lock? You could hide a waterporrof keyswitch somewhere that would achieve the same affect only for someone with the right key.
