I have to bring back the old MPG debate as im so chuffed with the GTI, had a gentle 26 Mile stick to the limit drive to my Grans and back last night,(warrington to altrincham via Lym Dam a good mixture of roads). I reset the computer for Average MPG and got 42 MPG average, thats only 6 MPG less than the TDI PD130 oil eater did on the same journey being driven in a similar manner.

Admitidaley as soon as you bury the go go pedal it plummets in a matter of minutes but of course its more fun than the diesel when you do bury it

Did you own it before the remap?
On my standard PD130 I'm getting 54mpg regularly on 40 mile journeys in the recent warmer weather, this was a couple of mpg worse in winter weather, and seems a couple of mpg worse again if I use Sainsbury diesel (I use Shell normally as down on the coast it's as cheap as the supermarkets).
A few days ago I averaged 59mpg (according to computer) over a 62 mile A-road trip from Horsham to Southampton. I still get mid-late 40s if I'm heavy-footed, and only really drops below this in stop-start traffic.

Bought it new had it remaped at 450 Miles. So didn't really get a chance to find out about pre remap economy

My consumption is about 28mpg on a run and around 20-25mpg around town!

I know most people really get overwrought about fuel consumption, but in reality if you want a car with over 300bhp then you ain't going to get good fuel consumption! Period!

The engine feels stronger since I had the fuel pump uprated, but it took a dive in fuel consumption by around 3mpg.

I'd still do it all over again thoughCool

If you can't afford to run the car, why get it? . I can sympathise with people who have had their cars a year or more when fuel was less than 95p a litre as the extra cost now can be a burden for some.

I've been ranting about petrol as its so expensive, but I get about 60 miles to £10, is that any good?

Sorry for the post jack Confused

It's a simple calculation using amount of petrol purchased against number of miles travelled. It's called mathematics. Chuckle

Seriously though. Your mpg of 31 might be good if you do stop start driving, short trips, carrying lots of weight, and have a heavy foot etc. but personally I've never managed to get my Altea or the Bora beforehand down below 45mpg. Whereas some members on here would be over the moon to see 31mpg.

    Now then.

    • £10 worth of petrol at £1.13 per litre equals 8.85 ltrs.
    • 8.85ltrs divided by 4.54 gives 1.95 gallons.
    • 60 miles travelled using 1.95 gallons of fuel gives 30.75mpg.

900 miles out of a tankfull of diesel in my Bora 130 tdi.

You do realise this would equate to 73.6 ish mpg across a tank which I suppose is believable if your continually travelling down hill.

Depends how much diesel you can get in a Bora tank I suppose. This wasn't the 900 mile tank, but this was nearly 800 miles while I was at work in the car, driving about the countryside. 900 miles equates to about 64mpg on the strength of that fill.

I based my calculations on the book spec, which is 55 litres but obviously that is a load of tosh if you can get 63 litres +. I'm not saying you are lying I just know there's no way I would be able to get 900 miles from my TDI.

All tanks have an expansion tank that allows the fuel to expand when it gets hot so you can force more fuel in as long as you know you will use enough of it to stop it wrecking your tank! Also you can get about 1 litre in the neck of the fuel tank that goes down to the main tank

BTW, I take it you didn't get any snotty remark from the attendant about you using your 'phone or camera on the forecourt?

Turn the air conditioning off, it helps ;)

I get about 42mpg with the aircon on if I drive my 2.0 FSI gently on the motorway, about 44-45 with the aircon off.

I struggle to get less than 35mpg on the motorway, even when driving it hard.

It's damn annoying - I tried to fill up the 55 litre tank at a Shell station by using the automated system where you put your card into the pump. It will only dispatch £60 of fuel that way - not enough to fill the tank. A bit stupid really as I just put the card back in, to get the other 5 litres or so to fill it to the brim.
