    Guys,

on my mk3 Golf, today I noticed it making a grinding/rumbling type noise when stationary in neutral.

Noise goes away when I press the clutch pedal down,  but comes back when i let go again.

I notice the noise is there when driving around slowly in 1st and 2nd gear,   So the noise only goes away when the clutch is PRESSED in.

Now I took it back to the garage where I get the work done on it,  the mechanic had a look, and said that it might be the gearbox,  as when you press the clutch pedal down, it releases any drive to the gearbox.   He suggested running a gearbox oil flush/conditionder thru it to see if that cures it...

I said I'd call him back to arrange a time when I could book it in..

Anyway,   I asked another one of my friends, and they said it might be the clutch THRUSH bearing that's making the noise.      The clutch was replaced 6-7months ago by the above mechanic,   so that's why I assumed he didn't mention the thrush bearing.    Or maybe he didn't replace the thrust bearing at the time?!

    What do you guys reckon?

IS it likely to be the thrust bearing,    or the gearbox?

I'm loathed to waste money on this car, as it's my daily run around (it's supposed to save me money!)

Sounds like the thrust bearing to me, typical symptoms of one on the way out.
