For the last few days the glow plug "idiot light" has been coming on and off when driving my 1.9TDI. Went past Kwikfit as they recently serviced my car but as my car still starts and runs fine (and their diagnostic tools were down) they recommended me going past the stealers to run a diagnostic at the estimated cost of £50... This morning I have been reading up on the more technical part of the glow plug and can understand a faulty glow plug could cause serious troubles in the short term but as my light has been going on and off I am wondering whether it isn't merely a faulty sensor.

Has anyone else have this light come on and realistically - would you advise against driving further till sorted? With the impending wedding I am not waiting for a significant cost but if it needs fixing I was hoping someone would have an idication what would be involved and how much it would cost if in fact the glow plugs are buggered...

I appreciate there could be a fault... I established as much...

Just wondering how serious this is and whether anybody has an idea about cost if there would in fact be a faulty glow plug or sensor.

Glowplug light will flash if you have a brake light out, or a faulty brake pedal switch.

Heyyyy, that's different - didn't quite see that connection. I just realise the glowplug light also functions as an general engine management failure warning light which could point to a whole range of ailments.

Just looked around google seeing what comes up with "faulty brake pedal switch" and one particular article (Seat forum) mentioned someone had this with his car ticking over. My car starts absolutely fine and runs fine so I am fairly confident I don't need to worry about the brake pedal swith. I will check the brake lights first.

It seems however to get the best picture I should run the VAG-COM diagnostic at VW and identify the fault code(s). Before I hand over my hard-earned cash to the stealers for this 2 -minute chore, is there anyone that could perhaps help me out on this? I am led to believe there are a few people on this forum that have the VAG-COM stuff at home.

I live in Belvedere, Kent (near the Dartford Crossing). Anyone near?
