Just away to start on the engine of my tdi 140 but was going to ask if anyone had much experience with the mk5 and allard. Before going for a remap was thinking of improving the air flow and cooling as much as possible. Not wanting to go for an all out new turbo but was thiking of a bit more than just a remap.

Anyone installed an allard FMIC with a remap and have any thoughts?

if you don't have a bigger turbo, are you sure an uprated FMIC is really worth it? pipework maybe.....

Yeah.  The intercooler itself wont actually see you any gains, and is really only necessary with a BT.  Try the exhaust side of things first, that should help.

I'd disagree, Speak to Forge and ask their opinion on std Intercoolers in VAG cars.... puny and ill-placed.  An exhaust will gve you as much or as little gain HP as an IC will on an untuned car. You only need to improve gas flow out of the engine if you are getting more air and fuel in.  Having spent £000s on exhausts over the year my one conclusion is that if your car an't tuned its a waste of moeny except for looks and sounds.... 2-3 HP at most, none of this 10-15hp quoted nonsense regardless of RR figures!

A good IC will charge cool much better than the std one which in hot weather and this is what you want.  Google 'heat soak' and see what I mean!

My pref would be this order

1 - Remap, Brakes and suspension

2 - Intercooler, panel filter

3 - Exhaust and uprated induction system, ie CAI

No experience of the mk5 but I bought Allard intercooler pipework recently for the mk4 and it wouldn't fit.  Apparently this is quite common.

If you're buying from them speak to them about this first!

In fairness to Allard, I had a custom piece made up and Allard refunded me my additional costs but maybe you don't want the hassle I had.

I think a few people have bought the Allard FMIC and they won't fit and likewise several places won't fit them either!

yeah think there are benefits for the diesel cycle to have a larger IC but not sure wether its worth the investment over just a remap. This seems to cover it quite well (http://autospeed.com/cms/A_109423/article.html?popularArticle ). Liking your list above as a possibility tho, but am i right in thinking you should try and do 2 and 3 first then get a custom remap to suit?

they would say that, they make/sell them.

you can't expect an honest opinion from a seller, their opinion will always be biased.

 heatsoak becomes an issue if you drive hard continuously or on track days. for day to day use there is no need. (maybe on hot summer days above 25c, we dont often get them)

do the poor mans mod and run a water spray to the front of the intercooler.

at 200bhp+ you should consider a better intercooler but dont go too big.

^^ Heat soak occurs in the VAG cars as they don't have air-flow away from the IC loacted in the wheel arch / well.

A pikey mod on MKIVs is to use an Auti TT wheel arch liner as they have slats i them allowing air to pass over / thru the IC and away, but on other VAG cars like TDI they don't have the slats so hot air build in an around the IC even on mild days, and heat soak can occur.

As mention, you can simply flow air to the IC better and then cut some slat into the arch liner or similar to ensure a constant flow of around around / thru the IC.

As for Tuners / Sellers being biased, thats very true but I know guys who race cars (semi-pro if you liek) and they too will say the same about the VAG ICs.... just look at BMW, they situated a nice big IC behind the front bumper becuase they know the benefits it brings..... not a power increase and a reduction in the risk of power loss!

 we 140 tdi have a fmic as standard and altho quite thin it is quite wide,and think this would be sufficent just for a map
