I've just got a new car with the RCD510 stereo and the VW Premium Bluetooth kit. Very impressed with the whole set-up, but I'm stuggling to find phones that will pair with the bluetooth system.

I've tried an old Nokia 6230i (worked okay) and a N95 (rejected as not compatible). Also tried 2 Samsungs and a Sony without success. The manual states that a phone must be rSAP compatible. This seems to rule out all Samsung and Sony Ericksson phones.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of compatible phones?

p.s. there isn't one on the VW website, or at Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Blackberry or at any of the network providers.

Amazes me that a company the size of VW simply refers buyers of this expensive piece of kit to their phone retailer!

Do they not test the thing with a phone to see if its compatible? BMW has a whole section on its website dedicated to bluetooth phone compatibility and its about time VW did the same.

I found this from another forum which may be of help. The info was from Wikipedia so should be treated with a little caution.

I think the VW bluetooth unit is actually made by Nokia for them hence a lot of the new Nokias are compatible

Gee, thanks guys, especially to Pluves1 for such a comprehensive list.

A lot of the phones on the list are now old and obsolete (like my 6230i), but there is plenty of newish stuff to consider.

Beware though, even some phones on the list need new software to work.  I've tried both an N95 and a SGH-U700 and they both bombed out.

I gotta' say I'm disappointed with VW supplying this piece of kit in the UK.   It's looking like everyone except Nokia is abandoning rSAP, so I'd be seriously peeved if I'd just taken an 18 month contract on a Sony or a Samsung.

    Thanks again.

You could try sending contacting the premium bluetooth kit manufacturer via http://www.novero.com/service_n_support.asp . IIRC the premium kit does technically support any/all HFP handsets if the unit has the right firmware installed. VW may be installing an older version of the firmware as standard...

This is shocking news... I'm so glad a came across this thread as I'm considering  possibly ordering a new car at the moment and was certain to tick the RCD510/Bluetooth options.

Just to clarify, is it only the SIM access that is the issue? Does Bluetooth handsfree still function? I'm currently tied into a contract with a new Sony Ericsson phone and don't want to waste money on the Premium Bluetooth kit if I'm not going to be able to use it. I assume the standard kit is straight forward hands free?

No, it won't work as a "normal" blutooth kit at all.  If you ain't got SIM access profile you are stuffed.

I'd be overjoyed if it would drop back into a simple bluetooth mode and act like an earpiece or a Parrot or a Nokia CK-7W if the phone isn't fully compatible, but it won't.  It's just too sexy and complicated to bother with non-Nokia phones.

I'm not aware that there is a "standard" bluetooth kit as a factory fit option, there certainly wasn't for my new Passat.  I think you can still fit a Parrot with a MultiCAN box of tricks so that the  steering wheel telephone buttons will work (I've done this before), but don't bank on it.

I've written to VW to try and get a fully up-to-date list of compatible phones for the premium kit and to ask how they are going to solve the problem that it is no good with 95% of the phones on the market.  Strikes me that there won't be a simple software update that the dealer can plug in, it's going to keep turning its nose up at your new Sony.  I could be wrong, we'll see!

Gutted. And disappointed with VW, this is a shocking state of affairs. I hate having features on a car/phone et al that I can't use!

I much prefer SE phones over Nokia too.

No, that's just a VW cradle, probably for some now obsolete phone.  The list of available cradles is every bit as short and limited as for the bluetooth kit.  The picture probably shows the "telephone prep" kit that used to be on the pricelist but has now dissapeared.  The Premium Bleutooth Kit has no cradle, 'cos it's bluetooth, but it is fully integrated into the radio and the highline display.

Quick update on compatible phones.........  I've finally got a reply from VW Customer Service.  It works with just a few Nokia phones that are available, nothing else.  Appraently it is the dealer's fault for selling me the kit, VW don't accept any repsonsibility for a crap product.

    DON'T BUY ONE!!

Not sure if this is any help to anyone but it is linked from the Mk VI Golf Configurator on the German Volkswagen website.  It is in german but I think you can get the general gist of things.

Yes, the list from DaveL is correct.  A few Nokias (most of them now so old they are not available) and a couple of Siemens (that you cannot get in this country).  Nothing else by Sony, LG, Samsung, iPhone, Motoroal, etc. is compatible.

So essentially you have to buy some old duffer of a phone to slip your SIM card into when you want to use the Bluetooth?.. something to consider when I buy an RNS510 then.

The chances of it picking up an iPhone are absolutely zero I'm guessing?
